Yes you are responsible for the damage - you caused the damage to your friends car. Why should your friend have a wrecked car because you were negligent?

Do you have an insurance policy of your own with collision coverage? If so, call your company and turn the claim into them. Depending on the language in your policy, the collision coverage on your car may cover your friends car once your company gets written proof that the car you were driving did not have collision coverage.

1) Did you have permission to drive the car? Let's assume yes. 2) Was there an agreement between you and your friend about liability if damage occurred? Assume no 3) Did you use ordinary care with the car? Assume yes.
You have no liability ,they should have insured the car.

Did your friend let you drive with his/her knowledge, or did you just "borrow" the car?

You have a moral obligation to help repair it, but not necessairly a legal obligation.
