And, what was the original Hebrew word that swear came from?
I read the 10 commandments, and nothing says not to swear, but yet people always say that its a commandment.
1. No other Gods before God
2. No carved images or idols
3. Dont take the lords name in vain
4. Remember the Sabbath
5. Honor your father and mother
6. Dont murder
7. Dont commit adultery
8. Dont steal
9. Dont bear false witness
10. Dont covet your neighbors
The only one I can see is the not taking the lords name in vain. But thats not all the "swear" words that people in America say.
Ive also seen other countries, like England, and words that we consider bad are normal their, and words they consider bad is normal here. Same with here and Japan and Korea. There telling someone to Shut Up is like saying the F word here.
So my point is, if its not a commandment, why is it bad to say? And if our words are bad, should we study all cultures and ban their swear words too?

I know the ten commandments arent the only thing were supposed to follow, I used it as a reference. The only impure thought I could find to be considered a sin would be lusting. Jesus stated that even if you look at a women lustfully you've already sinned. That is the only set of thoughts that I would consider impure.
Now, we can go through all the laws God made in the old testament, but we'd be here all day. The only thing that really changed was the sacrificing of animals when Jesus came. Stuff like eating too much, or being lazy, or having pride could also be sin.
So, with that, were supposed to lay down and do nothing cause to do something is a sin, but to do nothing is a sin, so whats the point of living if its a sin? You have to have some pride in what you do or you would have no reason to do it. So, you just do nothing, which is also a sin. I guess if everyone can be considered a sin, the bible is flawed.

Actually im the only one that doesnt swear at my work. The boss swears, contractors swear a hundred times more, using the F word in just about every sentence, most of them that is. If anything, to swear would mean I was fitting in.
This whole thing about not swearing isn't for me, I find no reason to swear because I can express myself at a much higher level. But sometimes, like if I smash my finger and the end falls off, I swear. Its not directed at anyone, its not said meanfully, its just the first word that comes out cause im in pain. For a moment I lose words and just swear. Is that a sin? Its not out of anger, hate, towards someone, towards God, but its out pain.

Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
This verse isn’t just about the vocabulary, but also the content of what you are trying to say. We all should try to speak kindly, and use inoffensive language just as a matter of good manners. But since the bible was not written in English, no modern English words are prohibited outright. But it is an issue of the heart no matter what culture you are in.

No, most courts here where I live, ruled that out. So now instead of swearing on the bible, they swear with their right hand up, I suppose that is good, since there are lots of different religions out there, who don't believe in god, I remember once when I was in court testifying against a case, and the bailiff ask if the guy swears to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you god, and he responded," I don't believe in God, I'm Buddhist", LOL! So now courts just asks" Do you promise/swear to tell the truth?" Simple and sweet.

Using the Lord's name in vain, or bearing false witness, is called "swearing". Vulgar and inappropriate language is called "profanity".
What we say reveals our heart, and reflects who we are. As far as why some people choose to be particularly careful with the words and tone of voice they use, the Bible gives clear reason to. For starters, check out James 3:9-12 and Galations 5:16-26.

The reference to taking the name of God in vain is where people have inferred that there should be no swearing. That is my problem with organized religion. They read something in the bible and put their own interpretation on it. Most of the followers dont read what the bible actually says, they take the word of the preacher, his definition as truth.

Colossians 3:8 “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”
you're ignorant if u thought sins could only be committed by breaking one of the 10 commandments. If u even think an impure thought, you've sinned.

The 10 Commandments are the most important rules. They're not the only rules.
There is a difference between cursing and swearing also.

Colossians 3:8 was mentioned.
Also Psalm 19:14
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Psalm 59
12 For the sins of their mouths,
for the words of their lips,
let them be caught in their pride.
For the curses and lies they utter,
13 consume them in wrath,
consume them till they are no more.

Culture decides what words are curses
however there is this verse
His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, oppression (fraud); under his tongue are trouble and sin (mischief and iniquity). Psalm 10:7
