I've recently encountered my second hit-and-run instance, and unfortunately my car is somewhat expensive to repair. So, I'm wondering if I should submit a claim with my insurance company to repair it, or try to fix it on my own. I'm told that a hit-and-run isn't a point against me, but that the insurance company may still find reason to raise my rates.

Your rates will still go up even though it wasn't your fault.

Insurance companies are a racket. The government says you need to have it, so they know they can do whatever they want to do to you. They will jack up your rates for anything and everything. The legal definition of "at fault" does not carry over to those money hungry b@stards. For them, if you were in the car, it's your fault. Hell, even not being in your car, if something happens, say someone breaks in and steals the stereo and breaks the windows, guess what? The insurance company will raise your rates if you make a claim, happened to a friend of mine.

Insurance companies also look at your loss frequency. If you file lots of claims - even lots of little ones - your insurance company could invite you to get a policy with someone else.

Talk to your agent - they are more familiar with the specifics of your company and the underwriting guidelines.

I've had to make two insurance claims for hit & run and one for vandalism/break and enter. None have increased my premium as they are considered "Not At Fault" accidents.
