At your school, are you allowed to talk about your religion?

At a friend of mine's school, if you talk about yours...Christianity, Hinduism, Muslim, whatever it may be...you get a full day's detention!

I agree that religion should not be taught in public schools, but does anyone else find this a little unfair? Getting a full day's suspension just for talking about your religion?

Give me your opinions or whatever you want, I'm open to all answers=)

My friend is Jewish and she was talking about Hannukkah. A teacher overheard her and she has to go to an all day suspension tomorrow.

To the person who said that he didn't "buy this story"...that's your right, of course, but I don't get 5 points taken away for nothing!

This was a true & sincere question. Many parents have complained, but the school has yet to take action. This was a recent "rule" implemented at my friend's school. They thought that religion was taking students focus off of school. So, this hasn't been around for years and years.

If this rule has been applied recently, your school's administrators are apparently afraid that conflict over religion will lead to violence and death since the issue with the kids killing other kids over what appeared to be conflicting ideas about religion.

If talk about religion is leading to behaviors that violate school policies or create an atmosphere of such tension that students cannot work, the school has the right to set behavioral guidelines to protect the purpose of school, getting an education. Schools do not have to operate with the same rights and responsibilities for youth as for adults. If there is a perceived threat of violence and disruption, the policy is appropriate.

Just the other day, a second-grader was suspended for drawing a stick figure holding a stick water pistol. It would not have been an issue except that he showed the picture to a classmate on the bus and HIS parents complained to the school. Schools are so paranoid about offending nutty parents that they institute insane "zero-tolerance" policies. Better safe from lawsuits than sorry.

The problem is most likely intolerant parents, even if the teachers and staff actually approve of the policy. As always, the students lose.

That just shows you how screwed up the entire system is. The problem comes with people saying you can't do that it offends me. Then if you bow down to the will of this special interest group you have to do the same for the next one or you are being prejudiced.

If people just followed the 1st ammendment, everyone would be fine. Atheists, christians, muslims, and even Hindu's. We could all say what we wanted, when we wanted and not be punished for it.

The first ammendment is there to protect all of us christians and non-christians.

Our schools are too worried about the law suits from the "offended" christians and atheists.

I don't think it's fair, and the school doesn't understand the law if they think it's illegal to allow you to talk about religion. I would ask for an explanation -- maybe they think it cuts down on fights. On the other hand, if people want to fight, they'll find something to fight about, so I don't think that's a good answer.

Have you asked your parents to protest this rule? Maybe someone needs to stand up to the school authorities on this issue. I'll bet they wrongly think that it's illegal for students to talk about religion at school? They just are not allowed to favor a religion, or teach a particular religious viewpoint.

Really? That's really strict! My school is a public school but it isn't too strict on religion. People are allowed to bring bibles to read (which many do actually). We even have a day once a year where we come to school about ten minutes earlier. We all stand in a circle around the flag and pray. Of course, it is your choice to attend.

Yes, this is VERY UNFAIR!!!!!!!!!!! This is against the U.S. Constitution, Freedom of speech and Freedom of religion.
In our school, you aren't allowed to WEAR anything about your religion or offending a religion, and we can't celebrate Halloween exactly but we still have costume parties.
Write a letter to your friends school or just tell her to talk to the school or school board about it. It is really unfair to get a whole day suspension for just TALKING about your religion but just don't offend anyone's religion or say what a person believes is wrong.

Some schools do prefer that religion is not brought into the studying environment in any shape or form. In France, this is true of all schools, apparently.

Personally, I don't agree; how else can we learn about different faiths? School is the best place to meet other people with different religions, and to learn to respect them.

Your school sounds really strict!

If kids are allowed to read Harry Potter books which is all witchcraft, then why cant they talk about there religions. We have the right of speech, petition, and religion. They are going against the Constitution. ANd, wasnt the constitution in which America born in based on the bible. I personally would demand the removal of either all the witchcraft books or the removal of my child from that school.

In the US it's a violation of the student's life to free speech to being restricted with regards to religious speech. But of course you need to carry on such conversations only when free time is allowed to do so.

this should be reported to the school board. you can talk about any religion you like as long as you are not talking during class or harassing anyone. children go to school to learn and interaction between other students is good for them, it teaches them about different cultures and religion and ways of thinking. if i were the parent of your friend i would cause quite a fuss about this situation. teachers cant teach religion, but students are free to discuss what they want between one another.
