delsym cough syrup works well for me. if you are coughing, avoid dairy products, especially milk. drink LOTS of water. the cough and sore throat are probably due to post-nasal drip. a decongestant should help also. check with your pharmacist before mixing over the counter drugs, and to see if any medical conditions you may have could have an adverse reaction due to the meds.

May I also suggest drinking lots of hot tea. Green tea or Chamomile are both great! Also add some honey (it will soothe your throat) and some lemon juice. Very healthy, tastes great, and it will make your throat feel a lot better.
You can also buy tea specifically made to help your throat, and cough. they tend to taste kinda bad, but you can easily mask the taste by adding another flavored tea: peach, raspberry or other fruits.

by the way, when you are sick, it's a good idea to drink lots of fluids.....this is a way to kill two birds with one stone.

I use garlic - cook plenty of it in my dinner, and cold symptoms go in a day or two. And honey and lemon juice in hot water eases sore throats. And you can buy it at the grocery counter, and you can't overdose.
