We are in Florida, and are very aprehensive of doing biz with just anyone. Can anyone help with a referal or some ideas.

Ask for references. Any decent contractor will gladly hand them over. Check with the local Better Business Bureau. Keep in mind ocmpanies who are 'members' only pay a fee to get that rating, but if they have any complaints, you will know it.
Call up a local pool service (chemicals and cleanings) company and ask for who they would use.

I just used this service, www.freepoolquotes.com - they sent 3 qualified swimming pool builders my way who gave me estiamtes. I ended up building a pool and saved myself some money as well.
Definetly recommend it!
