There are specific aircraft built for fighting fires. I don't watch the news every single day, but I have to believe that every tool available is being used.
This is not an Air Force function.
If we DO have available aircraft that can be used...trust me, it's being used. This would first be a responsibility of the Air National Guard, if not the Coast Guard.
In either case, just trust that everyone is using every tool available. They have to.
I pray for you and all the other families. I hope this will be "over" soon, so people can make a start on rebuilding their lives.

Actually it is hard to equip a plane with a water tank that can drop a lot of water on demand. It's easy to get it to have a slower release. But the aircraft were not designed to do this and also the type of drops the airforce does are more for resupply and these would actually cause damage to houses. So the military can help with some personell and some fire fighting equipment. But using the aircraft to water bomb is sort of out of the question.
Thank the canucks they have sent you a water bomber from BC and 2 crews so they can keep it flying longer. You might actually get more as everyone assesses the situation.

I heard this morning (Tuesday, Oct. 23rd) that the Air Force out of Edwards Air Force base did send in one of their big planes to carry water to help with the fires. I've lived in SOCAL for 51 years and have never seen fires like this. My daughter lives in the OC and another lives in Santa Clarita. I'm watching the news all day to keep up with the latest bulletin. I'm in San Gabriel and can smell the smoke too. Try to stay inside if you can.

No, the Air Force is not equiped to help with the fires.
Good luck to you! Be safe! Get the hell out if you have to!
EDIT: Well, I just watched a report on the news that shows USAF C-130's loaded up with fire retardant heading for CA. Looks like I was wrong.

I'm sure any Air Force aircrafts that are capable or designed to put out fires are doing so in California, but the problem is that most of the Air Force planes are too fast and designed for Military missions; bombing, spying, dog fighting, ect.., and not for putting out fires.

Why should they? The city of San Francisco does not allow military recrutiers in the public schools and for the most part the military is really looked down on in that state let the lefties and tree huggers fight that fire!

the Pentagon has sent 6 aircraft equipped to drop water on the fires. Additionally, National Guard troops have been sent in to aid with evacuations.

Because these planes have to be specially outfitted with tanks. Putting water in tankers does not mean there is a way to deliver the payload (water). It would also be a bio hazard unless the tanks have never seen jet fuel. I would go further away if I were you.
