Sure they do. It's probably a lot more common than most people think, especially when the weather turns cold. I've known of several people who break the law intending to get charged and sentenced to jail.
Then you have people who go to prison for a long period of time and become "institutionalized". After their release, some of them don't know how to exist in society any longer and commit another crime just so they can go back "home".

Yes, there are people who have been institutionalized by the system, and they do prefer to stay incarcerated. I am not one of them, and value my freedom. I do my best to stay out of jail.
I agree with a lot of answers here. But what I have found is the homeless tend to go to alcohol rehabilitation centers, psychiatric wards and homeless shelters in the winters.

Some people have been in prison so long that that is what they know and are comfortable with. They are not comfortable being out and having to make their own decisions and such. These types of people may not actually intentionally get caught or commit crimes, but they don't really care.

I don't think anyone gets comfortable in prison. It is the need that drive them to the edge of doing this. Who knows what these people have to go through? cold, homeless, et

In penitentiary, they get 3 food an afternoon, aircon and cable television - isn't that more suitable suitable than ravenous contained in the outback?

Yes. Especially people who have previously been in the system. After being released they end up going back into prison cuz they don't know how to ajust being back in mainsociety. So they go back to what they know best, institutionalization.

of course.
as the above said, it's free food, rent, medical, even T.V. it makes perfect sense if you know there is nothing you can do about being homeless.
Did you know it costs more then 50$ daily per prisoner? (this is with extra stuff)
