Imagine if you will that a number of years ago you were tissue typed because a person you knew needed a bone marrow transplant. You were not a match.

Now fast forward five or six years: You receive a letter from a hospital that you are a tissue match for someone who needs a kidney. Now the person will not die any time soon if they don’t get your kidney (they are currently on dialysis) but your kidney will greatly improve the quality of their life.

Note: The loss of a kidney has not been shown to shorten ones life span. However the operation is a tad painful and there is some recuperation time involved. Furthermore there is no financial incentive for donating the kidney. They don’t pay you anything but it doesn’t cost you anything either except for lost work.

What would you do?

No, I'd keep my kidneys. I AM after all using both of them right now. I don't know this person, I'm not gaining anything from it (if the patient was a loved one, I'd at least be gaining some kind of peace of mind), and there's always a degree of risk with any type of surgery. Not to mention the scars.

I have my own medical problems but I am a listed organ donor. If my kidney is healthy enough to do so, then I would donate. I know full well that one person can live a long time with one kidney as my father lost one of his to cancer 20 years ago.

The socially acceptable answer is that I would donate in a heart beat. The truth is that I am not sure. You never know what you will decide until you are in that situation. I think it would depend on alot of factors. (ex. how old is the person, why do they need my kidney, and how will it affect me to take the time off work.)

I would hope that I would make the decision to donate the kidney.....it's a bit intimidating, but in the end I'd be helping to make another life stronger and better.

I'd give a kidney to a stranger if a doctor was dumb enough to accept mine... I kinda went overboard with my "drug experimentation" stage in school... I've totally put my kidneys through the ringer, so its doubtful I would ever be asked... but I'd TOTALLY give my kidney to someone I've never met. No questions asked.

Do you have children or family with the same tissue? if so, i would honestly keep my second kidney in case my children needed it, or if you suspect a relative may need it further down the track.

However the decision is a personal one, and i think you need to ask yourself the question.

Tough question.

I would donate bone marrow in a heartbeat but a kidney is another story. What if my son needed it one day?

I don't know dear one, I would have to think about it.

I would keep my kidney in case I could help someone I knew and loved, later.

Helping strangers is noble and all... but you're talking about an organ. And I believe in taking care of your own first.

I'm not sure how your question fits
in religion and spirituality...

But I think I would give the kidney.
I'm not a drinker, so I don't anticipate having kidney problems in the future.

Why not let it go to someone who needs it?
