I bought a Tanita scale. It says it measures 3 things: (1) Weight (2) Body Fat percentage (3) Body Water percentage. Is the Body Fat percentage (which has been around 27.5 to 28.5 ) the same thing as a BMI ? I know I am 10 to 20 lbs overweight.

No they are not the same. Your BMI is the ratio of your weight to your height (weight divided by height) and is used as an indicator of obesity. It does not tell you how much of that weight is fat or muscle etc.

Your body fat percentage is just that, the percent of your body mass that is fat. This is a better indicator of obesity.

Ex. A person with a high BMI of 30 who has a body fat % of 20% is healthier than a person with a BMI of 25 who has a body fat % of 35%. You get the idea.

No, they are two separate things. So if your body fat percentage is around 28%, this does not mean your BMI is 28.

BMI is just a comparison of height/weight and body fat percentage is an actual measure of your total body fat.

There have been studies to see what BMI correlates to what body fat percentage, that you can do a google search on.

there is no correlation between the body fat % and the BMI. a person can have a high BMI with a low amount of body fat. conversely a person can have a low BMI with a high percentage of body fat. the body fat % is far more accurate than the BMI as it works for everyone, people that have a large amount of muscle mass do not get an accurate reading from the BMI.

Hey there, it's pretty simple. You either have 9.2 or 10.2 percentage of fat, and fat only. BMI is simple to understand. 18.5 and lower: underweight. 18.5 to 24.9: healthy. 24.9 to 30: overweight. 30 and over: obese. Your underweight according to your bmi. (15.7) To be healthy you should put on about 10 pounds? But if your naturally thin than that's fine. Better for you (: x.
