Dreams are neurotransmitters in the brain firing. No one knows for sure why they are there. One theory is that they kind of "clean your brain out" of all the unneccessary information you pick up over the day.

Some people think it's random, some say it is related to the most recent things you have seen/thought about. Psycholanalysists think there is meaning in dreams.

They can be a way of living out your repressed desires but this is always hidden. What you see in your dream all has hidden meaning. Everything is a metaphor. Freud says that's so that you don't drive yourself crazy.

A dream is a story you tell yourself, about yourself. In the dream state, you can look over your day undistracted by others. In the dream state, you can look over issues you are having, and receive guidance there. The language of dreams is a kind of shorthand, where an idea is conveyed in a symbol, or symbols, and how the symbols interact with each other. If you can learn your personal dream language, you can receive alot of guidance and healing that way....
