Sleep works best in consistent "cycles" that match what your body needs. Erratic sleep habits often lead to other health problems, depending on the age, metabolic rate, and health of the person. But, sleeping in consistent cycles will with time help the body to adjust and take advantage of what rest it can get. So, even if you just slept 4 hours a night every night, if you find you can function on that much sleep, if you maintain a sleep schedule long enough your body will find that balance. If you sleep a little one night, it's better to go back to your old sleep pattern rather then sleeping extra hours. Also time of sleep is different then quality of sleep as well.

Not exactly. However, it's been shown that if you miss out on enough REM sleep (which is actually the most beneficial part of sleep), your body will be in REM sleep longer than usual the NEXT night in order to make up for that lost REM sleep. So even though sleeping more hours is not necessarily going to be beneficial, sleeping enough to get that extra REM can catch you back up.

Actually it can. Not in the way of sleeping extra hours exactly. Extra hours will help, but the way it works is when you get little sleep one night you miss out on REM sleep which helps with memory and brain function. Your brain needs REM to function properly. So the following nights, wheather you sleep longer or not, you spend more time in REM sleep than you do on a normal sleep schedule. It eventually evens itself out with more regular sleep.

There are different stages of sleep 1-5 the last stages of sleep are the most important rem sleep.
If you do not get enough rem sleep you will spend more time in rem on other nights till you catch up you can not catch up in one nights sleep although you will feel better.

once you have lost some sleep, consider it gone. you are not going to get caught up. your body will feel as though it has been hit by a mack truck, but its not good for your body to try and make up sleep when you have lost it.
go on about your day, and try to get your normal hours in on the following night.

If you're able to sleep for three hours during the day, some of your sleep will be made up for--it's kind of an assault to your circadian rhythms, but it will help, and it will legitimately help with your sleep deprivation to some degree.

Sure, I make it up on the weekends. I'm certainly not going to get up at 5am on Saturday or Sunday.
