I had to pay a fine and the police took a fingerprint of my only one left thumbnail. I paid the fine more than a year ago, I don\t have any criminal record on me, but I'd like to know if they will still keep my fingerprint in their database or it probably will be deleted? I've done my research on that and usually the police keep fingerprints of those who were taken to court or commited any serious crime, so more likely that in my case the fingerprint will be deleted but I\d like to know your opinion on this matter.

In the United States, the local police typically check the prints against the FBI's IAFIS database, at which time the prints become stored in IAFIS. Once the prints are in IAFIS, they're not going to be deleted.

That said, it's unlikely the police would take an image of a thumbnail, as thumbnails don't provide any meaningful identification. If the police took a thumbprint of the left thumb, they might use that locally, but it likely wouldn't comply with IAFIS's ten-print submission requirements, so it likely wouldn't end up in IAFIS. In that case, the print would be stored in accordance with the local agency's practices, which could be temporary or permanent.

As for the DNA sample, the police may keep them as long as they want. For fingerprints, they are more than likely in the system worldwide now, so they will have them forever.

Police don't take "thumbnail" prints...they take fingerprints!

They stay on file forever!
