Get a rx for lidocaine. You can get it in a cream or patch. The pharmacist I work with told me to apply a lidocaine patch for a few hours before getting a tattoo and you should barely feel anything. They are non narcotic, so no worries. :)
But in all honesty, they're not that bad. The pain is tolerable. I have three and am planning my fourth.

I am told that these numbing creams are a waste of money as they can only numb the skin on the surface. Because a tattoo needle goes through the skin and into the layers below the surface it won't make any noticeable difference to the pain.
Trust me, the pain ain't that bad - I don't consider myself good with pain, but I'm having my third project done at the end of next month and it'll take about 3 sittings and a total of about 7 hours. It's bearable - honest!!

DONT USE NUMBING CREAM!!!! it can cause your nerves to deaden to the point were the tattoo will not take. It will also cause the tissue in your skin to sag. When you use numbing creams it can do more damage than good. So let your natural chemical handle the pain. You can deal with it. Its not that bad. If your concerned about it. Its alot like drawing blood. It hurts before the needle sticks you, when the needle is in, You realize it didnt hurt at all. Its all mental. Just focus on something else while your getting inked.

It costs a lot but dr. Numb works a treat, my mate used it for a neck tattoo. Apply it 45mins b4 ur tattoo appointment. I have my daughters name on my fore arm and a big tattoo on my leg (leg doesn't hurt at all...) and the arm is only a little sharp when its being done on the side of the arm. I'm really bad with pain i cant even take a pinch. But the tattoos i had was easy peasy! And then on my bday this year in having a five finger death punch lyrics on me (cold). And day of the dead girl on me. So excited!!!xx

Don't bother. I'm told it makes the skin a bit harder to tattoo. There's really no need to use anaesthetic - it's not like having surgery, y'know? It gets a bit sore after you've been worked on for a while but as you're contemplating numbing, I'm guessing it's your first tattoo, and don't know what to expect. Yes, it hurts. No, it's not unbearable. You'll be just fine without numbing it.

Forget about that....by the time the skin is cleaned and the stencil is applied, and they get started, the anesthetic is worn off.
The only anesthetics for tattooing that are any good are those that are used after the skin is broken and you are almost done - it let's the artist get finished up and you over the hump when it starts to get bad.
My favorite is Blue Gel - it doesn't keep ink from taking as some will say. All the artist needs to do is wipe it on over the tattoo, wait 30 seconds and then wipe it off again.
It makes a huge difference!

I have an entire back piece, and it was okay, but getting my rib tattoo i knew it was gonna be brutal, it's one of the more sensitive spots on my body. So i got this gel called "Hush" tattoo numbing. It worked like a charm. it only lasted about 30 minutes, but it was enough to get me used to everything so i was able to relax. The trick is to not tense up, the more you clench the worse the pain gets. make sure whatever you get is water based, so it doesnt pull the ink.

Yes the creme works!... It doesn't make it totally pain free but it does help with the pain ... It depends on your tolerance to pain, some people can handle a lot ,while others not so much, my advice is to try the creme, it doesn't hurt to try it out for yourself and just see , if it works 👍...if it don't then you know not to buy it again 👎... Also taking ibuprofen helps about 30 minutes before getting a tat
