I have a shetland sheepdog and his is 5. I also have two cats. My dog (Frisco) keeps on eating the cat food so he is pooping in the house EVERYWHERE. We put him in the cage when we leave and at night because of that. I let him out ONE night and he did it again. I don't know how to get hime to stop eating. I'm not always going to be there to scold him. Do you have any creative ideas to what to do with the cat food? (I leave it out all day) If you don't have a creative idea thats fine. Pease help.

Leave the cat food out of his reach. A coworker has the same problem with her dog eating the cat food, she now puts the cat food up on one of the counters. That way, her cats can still get to it, but her dog has no chance.

Cat food is much too high in protein and much too high in fat, not good for your dog at all. Causes a whole lot of health issues. You need to pull that food up.

Your dog may need more to eat! Feed him more, and feed him twice a day instead of once. Make sure his dog food has enough protein in it, ask the vet or ask the breeder.

Simply find a place that you can leave the cat food out that Frisco won't be able to reach, like a counter, if your cats can jump. I have seen advertised in catalogs a doggy gate that has a cat opening in it. Cats can get through but dogs can't. Maybe you can build something like that to keep the cat's food behind.

Dogs love cat food because it has a higher fat content from what I've been told, and they are like kids-they know they shouldn't eat it. I had to put the cats bowls under my bed so my dog would stop. It just has to be in an area Frisco can't get it even if it means up on the counter. Or change the feeding habits of the cats. Don't feed them all day--just at night when you know the dog is in his crate. They'll adapt.

Creative ideas... Well if simply putting it on the counter won't work, try putting the food in an area that is too small for the dog to fit in. There are cat "playscapes" and "houses" where you could stick the bowl, and it would be too small for the dog to fit into.
Otherwise, you're going to have to lift the bowl at night. The cats will quickly learn to get the food during the day when it is available to them.

About all you can do is keep the cat's food (and litter box, too!) someplace the dog can't get to it. Either up high where the cats can jump, but the dog can't reach, or in a room the cats can go in but the dog can't.

Both my dogs will happily raid the cat's dish and litter box, so we keep those in a room that's off limits to the dogs. Good Luck!

Have the cat food out of reach of the dog. We keep the cat food on a low window ledge in the kitchen, just beyond the reach of the dog. We used to keep it in a room rarely used, totally inaccessible from the dog (via baby gate).

Feed him at a set time every day. Move the cat food to a place in the house where he cant get to it.(high). This seems to work well for me. I feed my dogs at 430 am everyday, put the little dog in his crate with his food, and let the big one eat his food.

my dog did the same thing... my cat dies though so he stopped..
any way. my dog never got sock with the cat food it might just be the food. but you should put your cats food on a little table or something that your cat can jump up onto. dogs cant jump as high as cats... but MAKE SURE you let your cat know where her food is by picking her up and putting her by her food in its new place
