Mind you his boss is a guys guy (they're in a sporting industry) AND he doesn't know him well at all - is sending something like cigars or champagne like totally INappropriate?

An airline ticket! Actually any gift you would buy for a baby times 2 will be fine. And, if cigars and such are what the fellow prefers that's fine too.

It depends on budget for one thing. Also, is he looking for a gift for the boss or for the babys or what? If he is getting something for the boss, a nice gift basket is always welcome. Some nice wine or brandy would be good too. Don't forget about his wife though. The boss would probably think it was extra thoughtful to send her a nice spa basket or maybe a gift certificate for Merry Maids to come help out around the house (she'll need it!) The easiest thing to do is get the babys sports jerseys from the bosses favorite team.

Ear plugs...lol sorry had to say that. If price is an issue he can easily get him a couple of age appropriate teddy bears, or a couple of outfits just about anything that a baby will need. But what I do is make a basket of all the bath items that a baby uses such as baby wash, shampoo, socks, lotion.maybe a bath towel. Whatever you want to put into it.

Does he want to get his boss something, or something for the kids? That's the first question. For the boss, maybe a nice bottle brandy. For the kids, gift cards are always good for the parents to get all the junk they need.

But your friends budget is also important, which would have to be taken into consideration.

Best of luck!(:
