I don't know if it has religious connotations at all; it's like Harry Potter and the Philosopher's/Sorceror's Stone - it's the "Americans won't get our crazy culture" attitude.

well it could be because of the religious aspect. Non believers could get angry over the use of "Rev" also alot of christians believe it is wrong to call a preacher "Reverend" because in the bible it says God is the only "Reverend" so most hate using "Reverend" or "Father"
