I dunno, I find it so amusing and sad when someone says something to the effect of "man was this, and animals are that." As if man isn't an animal.

Man is an animal. A mammal to be precise. Homo Sapiens to be even more precise.

How much more proof do you need than our latin species name?

Of course we are animals. We are classified as apes. You can't deny our genetics, no matter how much anyone wants to.

I'm happy/proud to be an animal. I don't need to feel I am better than my cat in any way- all species have good qualities.

Anyone who thinks we aren't animals and that the thought is insulting is a Speciecist.

Sure he is.
I spotted four of them eating at McDonalds.
National Geographic was filming them from the garbage can.
They were learning how to use plastic utensils and that was an amazing feat according to the narrator.
They stepped up on the evolutionary scale.
I thought they were just plain swine.
Oh well.

It is just a classification but if you call humans and animals in one term then I'd say living things.

what do they think we are, i wonder? fungi? for some people the word animal is just a biological classification... for others it has unavoidable and unacceptable moral connotations. the trouble is we are using the word to mean different things.

Just because they act like animals here on R & S, doesn't mean that they are. Remember what the Bible says - that man is made in God's image.
The image of God refers to the immaterial part of man. It sets man apart from the animal world, fits him for the “dominion” God intended (Genesis 1:28), and enables him to commune with his Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially.

In a way we are, socially, genetically. But some find it hard to believe that animals have morals.

Man was indeed created Allah as a creation above all other creations because we have the potential to become the most honored out of all creations. If we act with the best behavior, control our desires, and be the moral s of the world, we are indeed superior to every other being that Allah has Created. Beleive me people, this world is a test to see how well we BEHAVE!! Just please, if you'd look into the wisdoms of the minor and major details on the rules of Islam, youd see that it indeed is the way to live life, as a moral civilized human being.(again, ignoring all stereotypes ) Animals have been created for us as signs that everything lives and dies(and some many other signs), for food, and as an adornment for our precious earth. we are superior to animals in that we have a choice to follow a way of life, our life is not limited by just trying to get food. Allah has given us knowledge and nce as humans to test us. (we now know that knowledge is indeed so important in Allah's view, so seek true knowledge with the best of efforts

The Prophet Muhammad Sallalahu Alaihi Wassallam enjoined the Muslims during his lifetime to go seek knowledge even if it means that they have to undergo so much hardships as to travel to China!

At that time , there was no aeroplanes or motorised transport as we have now. It took months to sail by ships or to travel overland through rugged country sides and having to climb over mountains, etc.

Many question the Prophet's choice as to why Knowledge needed to be sought in China and not in the established civilisations of the Roman Empire , ancient Egypt or even the Persian empire?

China was the most developed and established cradle of civilisation during the Prophet's time and the Prophet Muhammad being who he is naturally knew that the best choice and location for his followers at that time was China!

Xi'an was the most sought after education centre during the times of the Prophet and Chinese civilisation was well known to be thousands of years well advanced from the rest of the world at that time!
