First it's important to note that 'private' and 'commercial' certificates are the same for ALL types of aircraft. As a pilot, you only hold one certificate, and your specific ratings determine whether you're flying helicopters and/or planes and/or balloons/blimps.
Category ratings include the following:
-Airplane
-Rotorcraft
-Lighter-than-air
-Powered-Lift (VTOL)
Like calnickel said, a private certificate allows you to fly family, friends, whoever, around for recreation. You need a commercial certificate if you are going to fly for hire ($$) or compensation.
Hope this helps!

You cannot do any 'jobs' with a private pilot license on helicopters. You need a commercial license to fly for hire or reward.
I've heard of several private helicopter pilots going together on a machine and charging for rides to build up their hours under the table. Strictly speaking, this is illegal and could result in a license suspension and large fines.

There is no difference in the certificates, only ratings and limitations. A pilot certificate has many endorsements that can be added.
Also, any limitations, such as glasses, restriction from flying at night, etc.

You can get paid to fly with a Commercial certificate.
You can't with a Private. That's the primary difference.

Brandon and eferrell have it correct. And, unless they changed it to make it PC, it is known as an "Airman's Certificate."
A copy of the FAR's (Federal Aviation Regulations), explain exactly what type of training and testing is required for all the categories of aircraft.
(This assumes you are in US jurisdiction, of course.)

about $50k, roto-wing is an add on for any license holder,Like getting a motorcycle endorsement on your drivers license. so,you have to get your ATP first if you want to be "for hire".
Plus there is even more endorsements to add to that if you want to make more money, IE:external payload, cargo and ETC.
