You can have a very satisfying life as a doctor. If you elect to be a surgeon or obstetrician, you are going to be "on call" a lot of the time. Most primary care doctors and specialists have other doctors to cover for them when they want to take a vacation, so yes, it is possible to have a family, friends, and travel, once you have established your practice. The roughest point is getting through all of medical school because you don't have much of a life during that time. Good luck to you! :)

All the doctors I know, and I know a lot of them, have a good family life. However, you will have a lot of schooling to go through & during that time, your life is not your own. Talk to your family doctor. See how many hours he was on call, etc. My friend was lucky in that once he finally graduated he fell into a very good position where he ended up with 250 patients within 2 months of opening his office. Down side was that the man he wanted as a partner didn't graduate until one year later so my friend was on call 24/7 for the entire year. He was an OBGYN doctor so you can image the pressure. He was married with a daughter by that time. He had no time for anything other than work during that time.

It's a big committment. Huge. All medical fields are different however. You could choose a speciality where you are not on call, etc.

A doctor is like any other human being, he need to take a 2-3 week vacation from work, or else he will burn out.

once you are a doctor- yes. During your schooling and internship/residency- hardly any free time to squeeze in fun and family. If it is your dream then it is worth the rough period!

If you don't want to be on-call and get called out, don't go into OBGYN, surgery, or cardiology.

If you want a Mon-Fri day job, be a dermatologist, pathologist, or radiologist.
