I wanted to build a square box for my trailer bed, but I would like it to actually be longer than the bed and built over the tongue. Will this affect my trailer?

It is safe. You should have a percentage of the total trailer weight/load on the hitch.

if you are building a box over the tongue, is your clasp and jack going to be easily accessible?

There is a limit on tongue weight for any trailer hitch. Find out what that is and don't exceed it with the addition of the box and its contents.

Be aware that ANY weight on the tongue will effect the handling of the vehicle. Weight on the back of the vehicle will cause the front end to lift, reducing the cornering traction of the front wheels. That's why factory and after market towing kits should include adjustable hydraulic shocks and struts, to compensate for the additional load.

In any case, the tongue weight, plus the weight of the load in the trunk/pickup bed should not exceed the gross vehicle weight limit for your vehicle.

yup. you need the tongue space for cornering , especially when backing up . " jackknife" it and find out your limits there . then you have the balance , too much tongue weight makes it harder to load on/off the tow car and will be harder on its springs . be conservative .
