I went to my first therapy session yesterday to discuss what counselling methods would help most. He suggested anxiety group therapy and anger management classes.

He said that I have some sort of social phobia and would need counselling to get to the root of the problem.

Is social phobia common? :S And how do you treat it?

I'm already on meds for depression and have it under control, but the anxiety/paranoia is a real issue.

Social phobia is quite common. It's often treated by a combination of medication and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which tries to address patterns of thinking which cause anxiety.

There are support sites for SA on the Internet such as this one in the UK: http://www.social-anxiety.org.uk/ and also this one which I think is mainly US based though has members all over the world - http://www.socialanxietysupport.com/

Good luck with the treatment. I hope things works out well for you.

Mark just do this one little thing. Take the Briggs-Myers test. It's on the internet. Find out your personality type. Be 100% honest with the test, relaxed, attentive, sincere, alert, dedicated. Keep in mind that, you really can't take it twice. The first time is the time that counts, so make it real, don't be cavalier, or second guessing, or twisted in any way when taking the test -- give your honesty to it 100% -- tell the test about yourself in a fully truthful way. Do it with care, but be relaxed. Phobia is a strong word. People with a real phobia often wind up on Paxil, or worse. You may just be an INTJ (like me). So, find out. Then you can steer yourself into occupations you will most likely be good at, and you will have a lot less anxiety about your life. You may find that phobia feeds on itself, so when you start making better choices, given your personality type, you create a negative feedback loop and you start building down (or right-sizing) your self-diagnosed "phobia". I'm just giving you Truth here (that's my job as a Mentat), not love, so don't try to contact me, OK?

Yes it is fairly common... you're not alone! Your doc is the best person to tell you how to treat it. You're probably already aware that treating problems like this often take time and patience as everyone is different and not all treatments / medications work for everyone out there.

Don't listen to this lady of liberty person. She is obviously uneducated when it comes to mental health issues and yet feels she is qualified to answer your question.

Good luck!! :)

NO such thing as social phobia. That's Bs we have been lied to about. Their is nothing wrong with wanting to be on your own and not talk to people. Nothing wrong with feeling shy etc. These doctors like to stick people in boxes and tag them with a disorder. I'm sorry they already med you not to scare you psych drugs caused me alot of problems in life. Warning you won't hear from the doctors dont' go cold turkey they could cause you permeant damage and ruin your life. Side effects are common no matter what people tell you. check out this website www.paxilprogress.org I didn't think about this at first your problem could be a side effect of the psych drugs. They caused me alot of similar issues I was unaware of at first. check the web page out from people who have had side effects similar to your . Even while on lexapro , prozac etc

Yea, i had it bad for a while. Then got into the karma thing. If you go around hating people all the time and / or imaginging they hate you, then you'll end up afraid.
