My boyfriend blames me for this problem but I have no clue why. He used to be able to play DVD's, AVI's, etc. on his computer. The DVD's would play with Media Player, the AVI's with DiVX. He says that one day, out of the blue, he couldn't play ANY movies on his computer anymore. I tried to install a new media player for him, which worked fine on my computer for all movie formats, so that he could enjoy his movies agian. The program installed fine, but when I put a disk in the drive, it wouldn't play. I checked the D drive and it wouldn't even recognize that a disk was present. My boyfriend thinks I did something on purpose because the movies he wanted to watch were porn. I don't care about the porn so much as the working condition of a computer he brought less than 8 months ago. Why did it play movies then but now won't? Help me fix his computer please!!!

Nice details question. Questions like these makes it easy for us to answer.
1st of all, the problem is probably not with the physical DVD drive because he couldn't even play Divx AVI's.
2nd, you installed a different media player, and that still doesn't work. That means the installed Windows Media Player is most likely ok as well.
That narrows your problem down to corrupt codecs. Files can go corrupt for various reasons, so he really cannot blame that on you.
1. Download ffdshow at http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ and re-install the various popular internet video codecs.
2. You'll need to locate the original discs that came with the system and find the proprietary DVD player installation disc. Reinstall that and you'll recover the DVD codecs.
For more DVD plugins for WMP, see:

Tell your boyfriend to point his finger else where, and good luck. :)

The drive might be dirty, which doesn't have a thing to do with how much pr0n has been played on it ... LOL. Sorry, couldn't resist. :-)
It's worth a try to clean the drive, and see if that makes a difference, before writing the drive off as toast. Get a cleaning CD (they cost around $10), read the fine print, and make sure it will work for computer CD and DVD drives as well as audio CD players. Then use it on the drive on your computer.
After that, give the drive a try with another disk. If it still doesn't work, then look into replacing the drive. Good luck!

You didn't do anything wrong, he did. Show him this article by Chris Pirillo:
Wanna know how to keep your computer free from viruses, pop-ups, spyware, and other junk? Here’s how to do it without installing a single piece of software:
Tell all the males in your house to quit surfing for porn
Buy CDs and rip the tracks from there
Get a Netflix or Blockbuster account instead of using BitTorrent
Instead of looking for software cracks / serials, look for coupons
Stop operating in Administrator mode
Adhering to these five points (and forcing your family or roommates to do the same) should be enough to cut your risk by 90%, I’m guessing. You could do more to protect yourself, though, if you feel the need to download something:
Download drivers through official (or sanctioned) sources
Avoid unnecessary browser toolbars, plugins, or enhancements - and if you’re not sure if a toolbar is TRULY necessary, don’t install it
Read through every bit of a software installer process to ensure you’re not adding something that you don’t need and/or want - and if you’re not a geek, don’t install ANYTHING without first asking permission
Think twice before clicking on links sent to you by email or IM - especially if they prompt you to log in somewhere or download something else
Surf through OpenDNS servers for automatic Web site typo correction as well as an extra layer of phishing filters
That’s probably worth another 10% as far as protection from spyware / viruses are concerned. If you wanna be super-duper protected, surf the Web with Firefox or move to OS X (sorry, gang) and run Windows apps through Parallels.

Well make sure you didn't delete any files. The computer should come with windows media and if it accidentally got deleted that could be the problem.
If that doesn't work try re-downloading new media or consider looking in the manual.
Good luck :)

You can't play a DVD unless you have a DVD reader or writer on your computer.

The same thing happened to my computer but mine is going on 6 years old. It's not your fault, there is something wrong with the DVD drive that is not allowing it to read DVDs any longer. The DVD read head could have burned out. Check this site to see if it helps.

8 months? then is still under warranty. Take it in before you have to pay more for repairs.
misaligned laser on DVD, broken DVD unit (unlikely, but possible), loose data cable for DVD unit, corrupt registry, etc
could be anything really
