BEFORE ANSWERING, READ THE ENTIRE SEGMENT!

WHEN IN THE LAST 80 SOME ODD YEARS HAS THERE BEEN A WAR ABOUT RELIGION?
YES, IM AN ATHEIST, BUT I AM SERIOUSLY GETTING SICK AND TIRED of this being an excuse for atheists to be angry at christians.

YES, we HAD wars for religions, but have we ever had them in OUR lifetime?

So why do we, Atheists, dehumanize christians just because they had a few wars in the past, remember, it wasnt JUST christians, it was just about every religion that existed, except for the mormons and the Amish.

But seriously, give me another good couple of excuses.

And WW2 DOESNT COUNT. It had OTHER reasons of being fought, mainly economic reasons.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest, ive been seeing it in like everyone of the questions i have seen.

omfg... first of all, the only reason we are in Iraq is to get rid of Saddam Hussein, in that we have done, we should be OUT OF THERE, not still fighting these fake fanatics, so please, this war does not count. Its not even a war. Just a long overdone battle that needs to be ended.

Wow, that's deep, the slighly happier blue ball!

Iraq is about oil, spreading God's word has nothing to do with the war, far from it. I don't think ppl read your complete question, buddy, don't you love it? You take time to ask and explain, and a chunk of few take what they want, eliminate the rest, or read the first two lines and go with it! Pres. Bush "crusade" is far from Christian, it's oil, oil, oil!

Thank you for pointing that out!!

Can I also take the time to piont out the other side of those that use anger? I would personaly like to see the Christians take the time to answer the real questions that atheists pose on this site to us. You are burning in hell is not the answer nor is it our place to judge that. It can be stated that it is a real consequence, but to answer non believers by damming them to hell is not what God asks of us to do. How does that teach? How does that show love? How does that show kindness and patience? I see this far to often and it really makes me sad. Just as proof that the two can carry intelligent conversation, I have been having conversation with an atheist for the last week on some really deep subjects regarding God. Unfortunately, I haven't changed his thinking, however, he does understand some points as to why a Christian believes as they do and how we interpret the bible. We don't have rude things to say to one another, even though we do not agree. I have learned some on why he makes the choice to not believe as well.

Christians, consider this, if you can not watch the seed you plant grow right now or perhaps before the rapture, consider that at least some of these people will have knowledge of things and know what they need to do to get through the tribulation. They atheist you don't like today may possibly turn out to be the marytr to help others during the tribulation time, on account that they remembered what was said!

Atheists can be angry at Christians for the spread of AIDS (The Catholic church demonizes condoms). Atheists can be a bit perturbed that the 'Troubles' in Northern Ireland had a significant religious component. Atheist can be annoyed that the "War on Terror" has a VERY significant religious component. Atheists can be annoyed that the Holocaust itself was due in part to widespread Jew hating which was encouraged by large sects of Christianity.

There is no reason to dehumanize anyone. BUT there is a damn good reason to recognize the harmful effects religion has had on society.... just as there are damn good reasons to recognize the harmful effects of other dogmatically extreme belief systems.

You are right, religion isn't the cause of any recent wars. But it could be argued that religion is the reason for the reason for the wars. For example. Israel has been in several wars in the last 50 years. They are because of land and political issues. But it could be argued that those land and political issues are at least partially due to religious beliefs.

Following WW2, the Jews wanted to move to the middle east because of religion. If they weren't religious, they would have moved to Morocco (really, they were offered this) and the middle east would have a lot less violence.

Part of the reason religious people are criticised for past wars is because it was their religious beliefs that motivated them to engage in these wars. If these religions had been nonexistent, so would the wars. That being said, the religious people have an obligation to abondon such religions that have called for unnecessary bloodshed and killing.

It's kinda like the neoNazi movement. When's the last time a group of these guys tossed a bunch of Jews in an oven? I do not seem to recall anytime recent. Does that mean that white supremecy and anti-semetism are acceptable? Absolutely not.

We learn from our mistakes and abandon behavior and mindsets that have proven to be destructive. Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it.

Food for thought :)

Uh, yeah, we're in the midst of a "Jihad."

"omfg... first of all, the only reason we are in Iraq is to get rid of Saddam Hussein, in that we have done, we should be OUT OF THERE, not still fighting these fake fanatics, so please, this war does not count. Its not even a war. Just a long overdone battle that needs to be ended."

Actually, we went to Iraq to prevent the "smoking gun from becoming a mushroom cloud." When the WMD myth was exploded, we decided that it was all about ousting Hussein and "spreading democracy." Of course, the REAL reason all along was that Bush was helping his friends in the war industry pillage the US Treasury. That's why people are dying, folks! Because there's money to be made.

The "Jihad" is on the Muslim side. As long as the US supports Israel, groups like Al Qaida will target us. That's the sad truth. But even for them, it's not ultimately about Jerusalem; religion is just the tool used to inspire the type of insanity that leads people to strap on suicide bombs. At the top levels, it's about good old fashioned world domination. Just as Bush exploits the religious sentiments of Christians to gain approval for his agenda, which has nothing to do with religion, so Al Qaida exploits the centuries-old battle over religious ideas to push its agenda.

I can't think of any war in history that was a 'religious' war and not a war over land and/or trade. Religious people have always been the minority in any society, except maybe today in the Middle East, and even so, the discontent there has to do with economics more than any other thing.
One of our Presidents, either Roosevelt or Truman, said,"if goods do not cross borders, armies will".

Yes,

Religious wars are still going on today. The very state of this war is the fight between Islamic extremists as Osama Bin Laden and the rest of the World. The very existence of the Middle East terrorists is the belief that they fight, mame, rape, kill, and steal all for the Glory of God. The Islamic beliefs have no separation between religion and state as America was founded upon with the formation of our Declaration of Independence, as stated by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists with a reason for the separation of religion and State. Our world battles in Iraq, Afghanistan, and with Iran are based solely over the protection of our world from Islamic tyrants. Many people bash George Bush because of his asking for so much money for the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and because he wants so much Homeland Security. Well, I say keep up the good work because as long as we have tyrants chanting about the Islamic Nation gaining total control of our World, we as Christians and Americans need to fight for the freedom of this world as we have freedom in America. There is one known saying, which states that the strong should stand up for the weak; well, this saying translates directly from the word of God to man in the book of Matthews chapter 25:35-46, which translates, that we should help those who are weak because it may come a day when we ourselves may be in need, and if we did not help, well, no help will ever come to us.

The answers you have received are excellent, so I don't feel that I need to expound more on the subject of religion and war...but I do have to remind you that we atheists are agains ALL religions not just Christianity. They all are flawed and they ALL hate each other and they are all the cause of conflicts. Whether you believe it or not. I find it odd that you are only picking up on why we are against Christianity and the problems that stem from it. All religions are guilty of this.

Apparently you have been sleeping quite heavily during your lifetime. Start with the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland then work your way towards Bosnia then mosey on over the the Middle East and take a good look at what has been going on over there for the last 50 years. If you get tired of reading just spend a few minutes watching the news each day..........

Trust me buddy, Atheists don't ridicule Christians as much as the Christians do to the Atheists. Also, Atheists don't really have to reticule other religions as every religion has factions within them that will do the job. We are having wars and murders carried out in the name of god everyday. Look in the middle East, every car bomb in Iraq its done with gods name either targeting the She'ites or the Sunnis, or US. 9/11 was carried out in the name of god also(hope you remember that). Bosnia, Serbia war was about Christians murdering Muslims and Vise verse, not to mention Bush's holy war against Iraq. Pakistan and India threatening each other with Nuclear Bombs everyday has religious influence. Iraq's 8 year war with Iran was again She'ites against Sunnis. Not to mention the suicide bombing right before he/she screams Allahu Akbar(God is great), Cults here in the US, committing mass suicide so that they can ride the comet to heaven, and people who carried out murders because Jesus appeared to them on their dream and instructed them to do so. Let me know if you need more examples. Now tell me one Atheist who has done anything of that magnitude while screaming ATHEISM..
