I know the improper use and terrible spelling of English has been going on for ages now but it seems to be getting worse.
For example, I just came across a comment on a YouTube video saying: "wot a awesome song am addicted tu it alreadii "
More and more people are beginning to write like that.
Shouldn't something be done?
By the way, don't blame it on young people, I'm 16 and I don't write like that and neither do any of my friends.

I think it started out as laziness, but now a lot of people seem to think that it's proper English!

Yes, and it's not even my language.
This was perpetuated in schools a few years back when woolly liberal thinkers 'ordered' teachers not to correct all of pupils' grammatical and spelling mistakes (lest they become upset..diddums). Pupils then thought what they had written was correct so they never learned the correct way.
Once they become adults they become reluctant to believe that what they write is awful and murdering the language.
It's about time the English language was rescued from the woolly liberals and taught properly in schools again.
Why the thumb-down?..it's true!..I used to BE one of those teachers.

Do not worry so much sweety, we might not like it, but all of these are normal processes of any language and there is nothing we can do about it; ever wondered how the Modern written system for theEnglish language came to be in the first place? Do some research on it, you will surely find it interesting. A language is a living being which is in constant development and evolution: it changes according to human needs, and it is only human to want to be economic when speaking and typing. If you don't like the way certain people write, just don't do it yourself, and that's about everything you can do about it. Evren if you start a wordwide capaign to stop these changes, if people find it more convenient to do it this way, they will continue to do it.
But do not fret: it wil take ages before that way of written can become even considered to be official, so you will probably never see such a thing.
Keep typing nice and be happy.

I am definitely worried. With the popularity of the internet, gaming, television, DVDs etc I think reading at home is becoming a bit of a lost art for young kids.
It's a shame because I think they will grow up thinking that 'text speak' is the standard way to write and speak English. I have absolutely no problem using 'text' language in text messages or when using Yahoo Messenger, but I think there needs to be a clear line between the two.
I think people just need to want to take the risk of sounding like an 'old fuddy duddy' to correct horrible English.

The language of shame. If the language of shame is not a language to you; then just learn French and German more because it's pointless having the Jack of All Trades such as me in other words; being half decent at French and German doesn't get anyone employment. Action is the only motivation.

I agree and have even noticed that this kind of thing has been happening in some newspaper articles I have read. Some people seem to think it's cute or hip and it has become more of a trend online but I just think it makes the author look really stupid. In fairness, there are more and more people communicating online who don't have English as their first language, however I'm sure that people's spelling and grammar skills in general are going completely downhill. It's nice to know there are still some young people who take this seriously.

I think you are entirely correct...I find it appalling when people's english is so bad online that you can't even read what it says! I do tend to abbreviate a bit to make typing less tedious but I'm not that bad.
I think people blame everything on "young people these days". I hate it! I definitely (sorry I can't spell) believe something should be done. Proper writing should be reinforced in schools and people should be more aware of how un educated they sound when they write in such a manner.
Wow...it's nice to know I'm not alone in my beliefs!

You can't deny that that particular phnomenom did originate with younger people, but I think it's a combo of laziness (not looking at one's misstypes) and people who think it's creative and original. Maybe texting is to blame. Either way, we should all be a little concerned. It's getting ugly.
Consider this though, proper english today is very different from what was considered proper 60 years ago and even more different 200 years ago. So maybe it's natural progression.

Oooohhh it is very refreshing to see someone your age concerned about it. I think that the failings lie in the school system.
When I joined senior school I could read, spell and had pretty good grammer, however a friend who came from another school could not even read.............
Different standards are taught and it should all be standardised. Also the advent of texting has a lot to blame as well.

I'm glad you don't write like that Colin. It's not only young people, there are even copy editors that don't know anymore that the plural of tomato doesn't require an apostrophe or which homonym to use, their, there or they're. The difference between you're and your. I don't know what can be done about it. The dumbing down of America starts with TV, is bolstered by religion, and if that doesn't kill enough brain cells, there's always alcohol.
