Oh, it could be any number of things. Cats have incredibly acute senses and pay close attention to the details of their life. In particular, they have very sharp hearing -- perhaps your stomach growled? Or your shoes squeaked? It might be something as subtle as a change in your breathing patterns that alerts her you are watching--so she stops and returns the compliment.

On top of that, a cat’s peripheral vision especially for motion can catch the tiniest movement out of the corner of her eyes. Cats have 155 degrees of peripheral vision while humans have about 90 degrees, so it may almost seem Kitty has eyes in back of her head! That comes in handy when hunting mice in the field or a moth at the window. And it can also alert her to suddenly take a hard look at you if a finger twitch or flick of your hair or pant cuff catches her eye.

I have a cat who does the same thing and it's creepy! I love her to death, but her staring really freaks me out sometimes. It's not even like she's curled up, staring at me.... she's standing up, just looking at me. I assume it's because she wants something or I've drawn her attention in some way. She usually looks away once something else makes noise or movement... meaning it has become more interesting than me.

Well I would say the cat likes to have staring contests...lol. I don't know, my cat does the same thing. Maybe the cat did something wrong and feels guilty so it stares at you. Or maybe it is trying to be dominant over you by not blinking first.

You are mesmerising and magnetic?!

Cats are the most critical animals on the domestic front. Your cat is reading your moods and movements. When you are relaxed Your cat feels safe and secure, when you belt around stressed out it probably picks up the vibe.

Domestic animals are often the barometers within the domestic space. If he/she is staring at you maybe you are doing something scary or something to unnerve the cat. Try being relaxed to the point the cat purrs loudly stares less. Stress is bad for you and very distressing for your cat.

Mine does it too, i don't think the theory about wanting to be dominant is true. Domestic cats have been around since ancient times and will probably have lost this instinct by now. If they still felt they could assert dominance then they would attack you. They generally don't.

Basically your Cat just wants attention, mine stares at me then jumps on me and starts purring.

LOL, cats stare! They love to stare at you when you're sleeping, and when you wake up, there they are, starin' you down, even as you sleep.

My BooBoo stares. She does this for several reasons: devotion, curiosity, hunger, etc.

EDIT
stl_eliza_20: Oh wow, I never knew that. No the heck wonder my kitty stares when I'm asleep. She gets the opportunity to be dominant! I sometimes stare at her for fun 'cause I love when she stares back. Eventually she averts her gaze, and I'm a bit disappointed, 'cause I loooove to see her stare. Now I "get it" --- it's a dominance thing. Good to know, thanx!

You just happen to be the most interesting thing in the room. Especially since we have to be looking at them to notice they are staring at us, and therefore engaging them. Our breathing is also audible to cats, and they can probably see our hair move and smell us perspiring....but they aren't wondering what we're thinking....why would they care? They're cats.

Well, I think your cat is staring at you because it wants attention, so give it some :)
