There is nothing wrong with Norton; it is doing its job. The problem is that you do not have enough RAM memory.
Windows takes a good portion of your RAM and Norton will take good portion, too; so, too, will many other programs.
256 Mbt of RAM is not enough, by far. You need to upgrade to a minimum of 1 GigBt of RAM. DO NOT take Norton off your computer. You will open yourself up to all manner of nasty things getting in from the Internet. Go to a computer shop and ask if they will sell you two 512 Mbt. Or, if you already have a 512 Mbt memory stick installed, get a second memeory stick fitted. You will see an immediate difference.
One more thing.... Run a cleanup of the disc, then defagment drive C:\ ..... Set temporary files to a say 6 days, or even zero, it might be defaulted to 20.
One more thing... Go to START... type into the box that comes up.... MSCONFIG... and hit the enter-key. Go to STARTUP and take out all the things that you don't want running all the time...MSMSGS and rubbish like that.... You will know what to leave alone, bcause you will only target things the start with C:\ Program Files\. ... Leave the rest alone.... If you are not sure about what you are un-checking, then take a look at the folder and see where you need the program running continuously or not...
Follow the screen prompt, and then tick the box that comes up after you reboot the PC, and Boy will it boot up quick.
As for AIDEN ASTHON, above.... don't listen to him for....
***** NORTON WILL NOT GIVE YOU A VIRUS *****
You will soon have a PC that runs quickly and smoothly again...

I will try to help you with this question. Currently I am in school for computers. I'm not taking the part of computers that you are asking about but I know a little bit about software. I had recently gotten my computer fixed by some of the guys at my school and they put AVG Anti-Virus on my computer. Before my computer stopped working due to a virus, I had Norton on my computer. I was told by the guys who fix computers and work on hardware issues, that Norton can actually give your computer a virus but it could be forever until you actually notice that it has given it a virus. Below is a website that can tell you a little more about Norton & what I am talking about. Yet there are more websites to look at that will explain to you about Norton. Too bad you don't live around here because the students at my school fix computers for free if they have like viruses on their computers & they fix hardware problems. They actually did a good job. My computer is virus free now & works perfect. Hope this helps you.

Well get rid of Norton and try AVG Anti Virus, its free and a phone line for connecting to the internet doesn't help either. So I would suggest getting a different security program and maybe changing to a broadband connection x

Norton 2007 Internet Security does run slower than earlier versions, the new 2008 version is much faster. Try disabling phishing this helped on mine, I only use on web site I do not know. You can also stop all programs that are running in back ground, do this from task manager.
Hope this helps

Norton takes up a ton of memory. We dumped Norton because of that and now use NOD32.
NOD32 was recommended by Jeff Levy, a computer expert on the radio. It's also inexpensive - recall it was about $35.

Thanks for your question and the answers given. It tells me that I'm having the same problem as you as I installed Norton security last week. Since then everything is in slow motion.
