What you described is both a temptation from Satan and thought that are in your subconscious. It is a sin if you purposely dwell and entertain these sinful things. If you sweep such thoughts from your concious mind as quickly as you can, then you will not commit a sin by entertaining these thoughts.

We humans are something when it comes to the imagination.
I don't think it is a sin unless you have acted on it or are dwelling on it to the detriment of yourself or others.
You cannot confess every single thought that might be wrong.
Sometimes during bad traffic, I fantasize about running people off the road.
I don't consider this is sinful since:
I would never, ever really do it and would be horrified if anyone else did it.
It is just a stress release for me, since in my thoughts, they are not hurt, and I have the whole road to myself.

Awful things popping into your mind are temptations and not sins.
Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
Sin happens when you deliberately dwell on those awful things.
You can talk to the priest about anything that is lying heavily on your heart whether it is a sin or not.
With love in Christ.

"Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed..." Corporate Confession, Taken from Lutheran Service Book, Divine Service Setting One.
A sinful thought is a sin. If sinful thoughts weigh heavy on your heart, you should confess them.
If they don't weigh heavy on your heart you should REALLY confess them.
The fact that you are troubled enough to ask this question shows contrition and repentance on your part. Remember that that Christ does forgive the sins of all those who repent.
Your friend in Christ,
Mark

I am not either one, I am simply a *Child of God* but this is what I see : the catholics claim to be THE CHURCH, the ONLY Church , claim it is founded by Christ... NO biblical backing for the claim.... They are under the direction of the pope, the head Priest.... Supposedly a direct line between him and God... the Protestants, are just what the name implies, protested against the catholic church on several points.. broke off into MANY splintered groups, and still are breaking into them... SOME of the them claim to have the *know all* when it comes to the Word of God, but in reality do not... they all have a little of it right and a LOT of it wrong.... We all do..... That's it in a nut shell... LOTS more, but you get the drift..... go in peace.... God bless

We have a sinful nature so it is in us to sin and too Satan and his army tempt us. Yes you need to confess your sins to Jesus and ask his forgiveness. The priest has his own sins to worry about.

There are indeed sins of "thought, word and deed"....but only if you dwell on those thoughts and they "conceive" (become sin) should you worry. It's a matter between you and your Confessor.
The Bible says, "But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin; and sin, when it is finished bringeth forth death" (James 1:14,15, KJV).
Is there a "way to know"? No. Discuss with your Confessor.

thoughts, words and deeds.
Jesus said, if you look with lust at a woman, you have sinned.
Yes, we are required to have Control over Our Own Thoughts!!!!
(Who else will do it?)
(And NO blaming of the devil!!!!)
(Except in certain instances, like when fasting, and you recognize the thoughts, and immediately say stuff like: "Get behind me Satan!" or "To the foot of the cross with you, evil one!")

It's not a sin to think about doing something, but it can be if you do it. Realize your actions are not your thoughts.
