Yes your separation probably has a lot to do with this.

When you have to leave him with a babysitter, or when he goes to bed, maybe you can give him something of yours to hold on to until you come back. Put some things in your purse (perfume, hand lotion, keys, etc) that you can give him.

Also it might be nice to give him a picture of you as well.

If all else fails, take him to his pediatrician... let the doc know what is going on. Maybe he will feel a referral is in order? There are therapists out there who are very helpful with problems young children develop over their parent's separation and divorces.

take care, too

Give him more responsibility to make him feel like a "big boy". Let him help you with some age appropriate things so he feels he is getting older and more independent! It might take time, don't give up! Let him know, don't just tell him, that you love him. Make him feel secure, put yourself in his shoes. Good luck!

Maybe taking him to a child psychologist or talking to your pediatrician would help. There they would help both you and him to understand why he feels this way and to develop some coping strategies for when he becomes anxious.
