Your dad needs to get a clue. ANY dog, if treated lovingly and trained properly, will not only be a great guard dog, but will also be a fun, loving family member. A former neighbor of mine has two Goldens and one night someone tried to break into a car on the street (not mine or his).....well, one of the Goldens jumped a five foot fence and ran the guy off. Sounds like your dad has some control issues or fear issues that need to be addressed.

Have you ever considered a GSD? I've got one now and she is an awesome dog!! She loves to play with the kids; but when we take her on a walk she will act all scary and bark at everybody (even people she knows) because she wants to protect us. Last night a new home two doors down was on fire and she was going crazy because of all the activity; she didn't care about the firefighters or police officers, it was the neighbors walking on our lawn that drove her bonkers!!

Golden retrievers are not known for being guard dogs but some are very protective of their family and property.
Just because the breed is not known for a certain trait does'nt mean they won't do a certain thing naturally.
Tell your dad it's all in how you raise and train them. And what's wrong with a german shepherd? I have 2 and want more. They're awesome dogs.

This is crazy. Why do you need a guard dog? Get an alarm system and adopt a dog from a shelter. There are many advantages to adopting a dog from a shelter as a companion. They are a lot of work and it's a huge commitment of time and money. Sacrifices will need to be made. I just don't understand why people still use the word "guard dog." It is so outdated and shows ignorance. Sorry but that's my opinion.

tell your dad to stop being the baby, and that he can get a dog he likes as well (so you can have 2 dogs) more fun for you and more fun for the dogs :-)

alright alright, i will be more serious,
what do you want from your dog? for it to be friendly and cuddle? big dog? small dog? how much exercise do you plan to give your dog?
btw: your argument for German shepherds makes no sense, what everyone does have is a Golden Retrievers (there are a lot more of those than there are German shepherds

umm guard dog as in trained guard dog or a dog that is naturally protective of its family? many dog breeds are naturally protective of their families and also very sweet and playful like goldens. do a little research and you will find the best dog for your family.

Best advice is this. GO TO AN ANIMAL SHELTER AND ADOPT A HOMELESS DOG! There are millions if not more all over america that need homes. Don't buy one from a pet store, puppy mill, or backyard breeder. Go to the animal shelter near you and save a life.

Think about a lab. It might suit both your wishes. They are good family dogs, but more likely to protect then a golden.

I would say get a labrador, there excellent dogs to have around children, they can be well trained aswel and they are really protective. Get one from rspca or a rescue centre. And don't rush into getting a dog, try a bit of research, getting a dog really does change your life, and you have to be really dedecated. Hope i helped and Good Luck ;-) xxx

I have an 85# golden. If your dad were to hear his "who are you and what are you doing near my yard?!" Big Dog bark, he'd understand there is some 'guarding' involved.

good luck, pups won't be here for another year, little girl golden is too young. ratz
