How do i learn to speech in different accents?

The only accent i can do is English, because im English but i want to be good at American accent. How the people from California talk, how do i learn an accent and become very good at it, so my american accent sounds realistic?

Watch movies and imitate the accent. Write down the places where there is a consistent change - most of the words with /TT/ (like bottle) are sounded with a /DD/ in American. There are other consistent changes - the /ah/ of bath, and path need to be pronounced like the /a in camera. And so it goes.

I am also a Brit and my accent will remain with me all my days. If I am out in the public arena, never a day goes by but someone says "Where is your accent from?", or worse: "Where did you get your accent?", to which I then reply "Walmart!"

If I could bottle my English accent, I could be a millionaire!

The only way to do it is to practice, and the only way to practice is to be surrounded by the dialect -- in other words, to put yourself into a situation where you're forced to use it.

A book might help you structure your practice. When I've taught pronunciation before, I've used the book American Accent Training by Ann Cook. It'll give you a good idea of the basics of American dialect.

But once you learn how to "speak American," you'll still need to adjust for the region. California has its own version of the dialect that you're not going to find in a book or class. And in fact, the different parts of California speak differently -- Northern California dialect is closer to that of Oregon and Washington, while Southern Cal is its own thing.
