The vet suggested that I get my maine coon groomed (she mentioned a lion cut). I googled pic of that horrible, ridiculous looking cut and all the kitties on the images look absolutely miserable! My cat Angelo is very shy with strangers and he hates getting out of the house so here are my questions: Has anyone gotten a lion cut to their cat? What was his/her behavior after getting it? How long did it take to grow back?
Thank you all for your answers, and hurry up...we have an appointment for saturday Oct 27th!!!!!!

Well, I went on vacation for almost 2 weeks and my catsitter/roomate didn't brush him at all! I asked the vet for advice and sin ce he has matts all over she suggested he gets a lion cut. I feel horrible for him, he tries to groom himself and pulls the knots off, hurting himself everytime. It needs to be done, I'm just a little nervous for him.

No personal experience here, but I feel the same way you do about it.

While I don't believe that cats have human feelings about bad haircuts, I think it's safe to say that for whatever reason, they don't appear to enjoy being mocked. And a cat with a lion cut will be mocked!

You should still take him to the groomer. They may be able to get the mats out without resorting to drastic measures.

But if not, he may be in for a haircut. So you'd need to decide which would look worse - a lion cut or bits and pieces missing? If there aren't that many mats, it might be a horse a piece to just cut those out.

We have a black American Longhair. Every summer we get her the lion cut. In the heat she is more active with the cut than without. She also has virtually no hairballs after the cut, and vomitting is minimized. The problem is not the cut, it's the groomer. You have to be convinced the groomer is an animal lover, and not just doing a job. Our cat seemed to love this latest groomer. After the cut and dry-bath was complete, she put a ribbon and bow around the cats neck. Our cat won't even let us put a collar on her neck. That ribbon was on there for a week. The cat could have easily taken it off. If you want to associate human qualities to the cat, she seemed to strut after comming home from the groomer.
Before we got the cut for the first time, I said it's a long haired cat, and we should leave it that way. Any long haired cat I get in the future will get the lion cut. I grew up with cats. Always had at least one.
The last cut we got for her was July. It has completely grown back.

Two of my cats have a Lion cut and both are long haired. My little girl has a skin complex and takes medicine daily and just couldn't keep up with her grooming. She absolutely loves not having to groom all that long hair. My oldest cat is Maine Coon and he has had tummy problems his whole life. My vet suggested all sorts of medications to try to help but nothing did. After about 3 weeks of him vomiting after he ate each morning, I asked my groomer to give him a Lion cut hoping that not having all that hair to deal with might help his tummy problems. He loves the cut, is more agreeable and hasn't vomited once since getting his new look.

There is a brush that you can buy in pet stores called a matt brush. They have them in dog and cat sizes. These get the matts out really well. I have a long haired tortie and when I got her she had horrible matts. I used the matt brush and it works great. You have to be gentle, and go slow and it pulls a little but definitely less stressful than a groomer, especially if your cat is on the shy side. The matt brush is more like a comb, one row of hard metal "bristles." The lion cut is disgusting to me and cats don't always grow hair back the same. I hope this helps. You can also buy spray on conditioner that might help as well.

Why can't the cat just get a good bath and brush out? Is it all matted?
The only reason for getting a LONGHAIRED cat cut like that is total matting. They have a long coat for a reason and I have no idea what the latest fad is with cutting most of their coat off.
It takes a while to grow back and is often NEVER the same after.

My cat hid from me the first time i had that done, i didn't see her for 5 days, i guess they have feeling. you see they are already lions in their own minds, and the fact you want her to look cool is your idea. it is cute and your freinds and neighbours will think it cute. go ahead as long as it gets rid of the mattes i will agree with you.

Yes. Jethro is a longhaired black and white. He thinks he's hot stuff after he gets his cut because everyone loves it and tells him. He struts. The animal hospital that was doing the cuts has stopped due to groomer quitting. Now I've found another and will be making his appointment. Best $132 ever spent (every 2 months)
