I mean if they were to go back to the basics of Christianity they would be Catholic wouldn't they?

I would appreciate it if you did, since most people seem to have forgotten the difference between a fundamentalist and the kind of bible thumpers that most find so irritating.

No they would be 33AD Christians. The Catholic church did not emerge until centuries after Christ.
You are almost where I was four years ago. Christians should be fundamentalists, following the core principles of Christianity, not those things made up centuries later by Catholic or Protestant theologians. Only those things in scripture and revealed by the Holy Spirit. This is why for the past few years I embraced the term fundie. Although you see it as meaning the religious right, I do not. I see it as meaning those in 33AD.

Going back to the basics of Christianity would lead you back to AD 33 in Acts 2. This is where the church actually began on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit fell in Jerusalem upon those in the upper room, including all 12 of the disciples who, after that day, were called apostles. So in actuality the true fundamental church is actually called Apostolic. They follow and are following the teachings of Jesus Christ given to the apostles.

Huh? The early church in Jesus day was called Catholic. I don't think so and if you check history they only came into being way later. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has earlier origins. But no fundamental means basics as Jesus taught.
Love God with all your heart and treat your neighbours as yourself. How's that for fundamental.

No, they wouldn't be catholic.
Anyway, anyone who tell someone else they are going to hell is a fanatic and not a fundamentalist in my opinion.
