He needs to have his blood sugar checked.

Carbs will add weight. Just mix rice with meat or pasta with meat or anyother carb. They raise the bloodsugar and will help to store fat. You should ask your vet to check him for diabetes. A low weight may be a symptom of DM.

He is beautiful.

Young huskies tend to burn calories fast. As long as he's healthy, there's really no reason to put weight on him. He'll "fatten up" over time.

If you really feel it necessary to add weight, try Satin Balls:

It's not a good idea to "free feed" a dog, especially a husky. Put food down in the morning for 10 minutes then pick up what he doesn't eat. Same thing in the evening. Reasons for doing it this way:

It gives you control. He'll see you as the source of food and less likely to challenge you (if he's less than 2 years old, you have the teen years to look forward to)

You can monitor his eating habits and will be able to notice problems quicker. If he stops eating you'll know it and be able to contact the vet if necessary.

If a dog eats at a particular time every day, he'll potty at around the same time every day. Much easier on you; you won't have to let him out 10 times a day. Also you can monitor his bowel movements and spot any problems (see above).

Good luck!

Well, in general, tables scraps aren't good for dogs because what most people give there dogs is junk. Now, if you are taking the time to make sure your dog has a balanced diet, that isn't table scraps, it's a home diet and isn't bad at all. Vet's educations are not focused on diets. I think some vets are just wanting to make a buck and others just don't know how junky most foods are.

My dog has the same problem. He has lots of allergies and every time he has a bad bout with his allergies, he looses weight and won't gain it back. The following recipe I obtained at an AKC meeting. It can be cut in half or quarters and frozen in packages. The ingredients are just mixed together and fed to the dog raw. Hope this helps.

10 pounds of fatty hamburger
1 large box of Total Cereal
1 large box of Quaker Old Fashioned Oatmeal
10 packets of non-flavored gelatin
10 eggs
1 jar of wheat germ
1 cup of safflower oil
1 bottle of molasses

honestly, free feeding is not the way to go. feed him twice a day. i would put some brown rice in his food, or buy a high quality wet and mix it in.

he probably isnt eating very much b/c the food is always there. if you give him 2meals a day hell know it is time to eat and will be hungry. free feeders are usually not heavy eaters, b/c they know it will always be there

also is your dog a little bit anxious? a girl i work with has a rottie who was abused, and now has huge anxiety problems. if you saw the dog you would think it was starving (you can see ribs) but the dog gets 8 cups of food a day and burns it off by pacing and panting everytime she is left alone. that would be something to see a vet for, probably a different one

If the vet says his weight is fine - it probably is.
Most people tend to think their dogs are too thin for some reason. Since he is young he isn't going to gain as much weight as an adult dog will.
Yes, you can add cooked rice to his diet if you really need to fatten him up. I give it to my dogs sometimes as they really like it.
But he is probably just fine. Just give him time to grow up.
Good luck to you.

Just feed him a higher quality food like Innova or Canidae. it contains more fat so he might add a little weight, although he'll probably eat less because he's getting more nutrition without the fillers in most foods.

Beef Stew. Make a pot of it and pour some over his food everyday. Rice and Chicken always help also. You have a beautiful dog!

First of all have him nuetered if you want him to be healthy. Unnuetered dogs get cancer. also I think you should feed him some high and fat protein food like EVO. It will help him gain weight.

scrambled eggs, chopped chicken, vegg from a bag, more dog food. try a less crunchy dry dog food and mix everything together.
