It smells like hell..gangrenous wound, dead mouse, ultra dirty socks, rotten meat rolled into one. I haven't tasted it though but my husband has and he thinks that the taste is divine. I have heard from others that it is an aphrodisiac. I never tried to prove or disprove it because I don't need it.

I think some of the responses are a little extreme. Durian does have an unpleasant smell, its a little like rotting garbage or the drains. The fruit itself is delicious, particularly as part of a tropical fruit salad.

Yes, a Thai friend smuggled some years ago, cause they aren't allowed on the planes either. She managed by clingfilming it, then put it inside a hermetic plastic container, wrapped in more cling film and into another container, cling filmed once again and inside a zip lock bag. Opening the parcel was like peeling an onion, layer after layer, lol. The smell was revolting, and I thought it had gone off, ultil she assured me it wasn't so. I tried as not to offend my friend and it wasn't too bad, but certainly not worth all the trouble.

Yes, it's like vomit. Even the hotels in Thailand have signs up saying No Durian.

if you ever smelled a rotting onion or a potato that's rotted out and oozing... that's what it smells like.

The taste is just as worst. I don't understand who people can say durian has a "sweetnees" to it.

I have (and yes I tried eating it for a dare). Supposedly it smells like rotting flesh. I haven't smelled that so couldn't make the comparison.

Put it this way it is highly pungent and gets right up your nose.
