No, it won't wipe away your files and folders in Windows. Of course you need to have unused free space on your computer where Ubuntu can be installed (minimum of 5-6 GB). Else you will have to repartition your existing Windows hard drive space. There isn't any need of following a video or anything because installing Ubuntu is one of the easiest things in the world. All you have to do is to follow the instructions on a completely GUI interface if you are running the Live CD.

Installing Ubuntu shouldn't wipe files unless you do a clean install. I would recommend partitioning your drive. That would be the safest way.

Another option you can do is use VMware sever and install Ubuntu as a virtual system. You can also run Ubuntu as a live cd or dvd. This mean you can use the system right off the media. This is preferred by people that want to try it out but not ready to get rid of their windows machines.

I'll put this on my blog at www.yuwie.com/breleo

Another thing you could do is use Wubi. Wubi is like dual booting but I think it is much simpler.

Live CD: is just if you want to try out Ubuntu
Wubi: is for a more serious try out
dual booting: is for completely switching to Ubuntu but you still need windows for some programs
Complete install: is for people that don't need windows.

And VM-ware I don't use so I don't know where that would fit in.

Also Wubi will not delete any of your Windows files.

Don't do that. Get the LIVE version and use it to Make a new partition from the unused space on the WindBlows partition. THEN install it on the new partition...

No, it won't wipe your existing files unless you tell it too.
here's just one visual guide i found.
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p3.htm

when you put in your ubantu disc you can live boot.

here's ubantu's offical documintation on installing on i386 machines
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/installation-guide/i386/
this also goes through installing it from usb and other media.

but here is the bit on multi-boot systems which is what you should read.
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/installation-guide/i386/non-debian-partitioning.html

i recomend you read most of the installation documentation and/or print it of so you can have it handy while installing.

welcome to the world of opensource :)

No, done properly it shouldn't alter your Windows partition in any way.

A link to the video would have been helpful.

Not if you install to another partition.
