It sounds fine to me and I make cakes. It is a little old fashioned to use heart shaped cakes but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with that. In fact I think it is so traditional that it would be unique because no one is using heart shaped cakes nowadays. The red roses and glass couple on top would be pretty too. Depending on how many people you are having, you probably don't need the heart shaped 1 layer cakes.

Are you making it yourself, or are you having a baker make it? We got a 2 tier heart shaped cake as well, but we went to a place that specifically made wedding cakes, and they had loads of photos to choose from.
Here's a link to a photo of the cake from our wedding http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos547/1/91/72/8/6/8/806087291103_0_ALB.jpg

Maybe you should have this family member make smaller samples and then pick the one you like best. Of perhaps just sketch it out and see what they can do.
