I know I can get local channels on my tv without purchasing cable. I live in rochester NY and right now am getting channel 8, 10, and 13. Does anyone know which other channels will come in? I need to know what channel to look for so when I move the cord i'm using as an antenna I know where to look for them. Thanks

Rochester also has full power stations ch 21 PBS and ch 31 FOX. It looks like the nearest CW station is ch 23 but it's 66 miles away. There are also supposed to be some low power stations on 20, 36, 40, 42, and 47

If you enter your location at one of the web sites below you can find the direction & distance to the TV transmitters.

If you are just using a piece of wire as an antenna, you will have trouble receiving (analog) channels above 14. Time to invest in an actual pair of rabbit ears or something designed to receive both UHF (analog ch 14-69) & VHF (analog ch 2-13).

First, get a real, powered tv antenna. It's well worth it. Then, check out http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx You can plug in your address, and it will tell you not only what channels you should be getting but what direction to point your antenna! I've had the cable monkey off my back for four years now, and I'm never looking back!

You can still have basic cable only its pretty cheap like 15/mo. just the local channels plus a few.

i don't live in newyork but it looks like you actually need an antenna to pick up all your local channels- you need to get a uhf/vhf antenna and you will get all your local channels.
thank you
