I'm installing Internet for the first time in my home and would like to find a reliable parental control software to download until I buy one. Please give recommendations along with their sites. Also I would appreciate if you give me the names of the best parental control softwares out there to buy. Thanks.

Hello!

This is a nice question! I bet there are many, many parents out there asking themselves the same. Some of us have found nice solutions, but depending on how "smart" your kids are, it can be easy to get around it... so you must be very strong in the implementation.

One of them is Microsoft Family Safety. http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/86026b03-18b0-4c42-9884-5af83226e2bd1033.mspx?mfr=true It's still in beta testing, but I have found it to be very good. You can control which sites your kid can access, and even who he can chat with by using MSN Messenger. If they want to get into a website Family Safety cannot rate (and will block) they can send you a "Permission request" by e-mail, that you can answer from any computer with Internet access. A drawback here is, that if some of your kids come to know your password, you're doomed, since they'll have free access to anything.

The other one I have used is AOL Parental Controls. https://parentalcontrols.aol.com/parconweb2/home/landingPage.jsp?encodedOrigUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fparentalcontrols.aol.com%2Fparconweb2%2Fhome%2FviewMain.do%3Fncid%3DAOLCMP00300000001153
This one is more strict, since it also blocks internet usage time. You can, for example, set at what time the internet service should turn off for each of your kids, and even what software they can use to connect to the Internet. Its a bit more complicated, but the good thing is that you can control when the kids no longer should be online. Like the first one, it is also password protected. So make sure they never figure out your password.

Hope this helps.
