Just a question for all you "designer" dog breeders out there:

Since there is no breed standard for the mixture of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, or a Yorkie and a Maltese, how do you predict what on earth the offspring will look like? How can you guarantee it won't shed? What about diseases and conditions that are specific to the parent breeds? How do you assure buyers that your perfect little Pomischnorkapeekadox won't have issues as he grows to _____? size? In short, how can you guarantee that you are a responsible breeder? Are you a responsible breeder? Tell me why.

Thanks.

Lookit the familiar faces. Not one Maltipoo enthusiast. What happened to the 'my dog is the BEST' confidence that radiates out of their "I'm gonna breed my Maltipoo" questions? Can't tell little ol' ignorant me WHY you should do that? I feel so left out of the loop...

Annabelle and Binkis Mom: You are very sweet, but just because the 'breeder' of your dog was a nice person and had emotional ties to the dog still doesn't mean that she knew what she was doing. Did she show you pups from past litters? Did they look anything like your dog? Did she offer you test results on the parents or a lifelong health guarantee? This is the whole point of the question- whether that person should be doing this at all...Thanks for your input.

Doodle + Designer Breed you get Mutt Poo.. Mixed breed dogs that are big or small, nice or nasty, shed or don't, cute or ugly, smart or dim, It's a HUGE surprise.. Not to mention all the health problems.. It's like Bits and Bites, a surprise each time you reach into the box..

Howldine : I feel bad for ya.. NO answers from those you expected to hear from.. So I will try to answer on their behalf.. what I would expect them to tell you oK?.. Hold on.. I threw up in my mouth a bit.. THIS IS GOING TO BE HARD..

Sorry, I cannot predict what will come of the breeding.. But that's the fun part.. Cute puppies that are all different Yipppppeeee
I don't guarantee puppies for more than 2 hours.. If they make it back to your house, they'll probably be fine with the whole shedding thing. Plus once the puppy is gone from my garage.. I mean home, the shedding is your problem.
Diseases and conditions?? What do you mean?? Designer breeds do not get sick, they are healthier than Purebreeds.. Hybrid Vigor.. DUH..
I don't have to assure people of anything.. I tell them what they want to hear, I get my cash and screw you.. Oopps I mean. Don't worry, things will be wonderful.
No guarantees in life babe..

There ya go Howldine..

How can you grantee something that has no standard? It's impossible. You get what you are given. No 2 will ever be the same.

They will shed even if only a little but say you breed an infamous Lab/Poodle it may shed much less like a Poodle or it may shed just like a Lab.

Also I know groomers who are refusing to clip this type of dog as the coat goes here, there and everywhere and they take so much longer to do. People don;t want to pay more for the extra time. Of course these are people who had no idea that this dog would probably need clipping every 6-8 weeks anyway.

I really hope we do get some intelligent answers from those who breed these as I'm always open to learn.

I'll bet you don't get any replies from designer dog breeders, either. They'r too busy scamming the unwary. And those who are genuinely trying to create a new breed somewhere are probably too busy working with their dogs.

But while we're talking about it, what would you call a Bull Terrier x Shih Tzu mix?

Edit: Michelle M., how can you say such a thing about inbreeding? We all know that every mixed breed is completely free of all genetic flaws, has a perfect temperaments and is immune to all known diseases. Never mind that their gene pool is smaller than a kitchen sink - mixed breeds are always perfect, right?

Hey, I have a couple of mixed breeds that I pulled from a not so nice situation. I'm not sure exactly what they are, but they're something with a coon hound. I was told Akita, so maybe they're COONITAS! Very rare, for sale, cheap, only a few grand each.

thats just it....they can't, thats why they can't have a breed standard...the dogs are completely unpredictable. Reputable breeders know that they are just muts. The have no idea how big they will get, what there temprament will be like, if they will shed, what ever..they are just like presents! a suprize in every box! You never know what you are going to be stuck with! I doubt any of these ignorent people are going to awnser because they don't know that is the awnser to your quesiton they don't know.

EDIT- Why do they breed?

I need the money
Puppies are vute
I am going to become a breeder mind as well start now
you never know this could become the labradors of tomarow today!
They will be registarable someday
they have champion lines! they just are not the same breed!
They are special
My kids want a puppy so I figurd I better breed a litter so they can have there pick
I can't afford to spay and neuter so I breed and sell the puppies so I can get they money.

PLENTY MORE NON RESON RESONS!

awwww! I think I am going to cwy! They gave me thumbs down! Like I CARE!

This is one thing I think they say..... lol

"Vet? What vet? Why would you need a VET? All they do is take away your money! Why would you go to a vet when you can just look at the puppies and see that they are healthy! I mean really! They are suposed to have little wet noses well these guys are so healthy there noses are driping! They are supposed to have good blood pressure well the guys blood pressure is so good that they have blood comming out of there butt holes! Why bring them in the house?! I don't want them wrecking my stuff! Give them baths? That is just a waste of water! feed them? That is the mommys job not mine! Where the pups born inside? NO WAY! Of course not! They will over heat! and get blood on my new carpet I used the money from the last litter to buy! I save money by not giving them shots! Do they shed? How the Hell am I supposed to know that I never see them I am in the house and they stay in the goradge! They are suposed to be very tight and not over wheight well they are so tight that there ribs are showing! but it is hard to tell with all that loose fur. How old are they? You kidding me?! I don't even know when they where born! ****! I didn't even know the girl was pregnant! Missing Teeth? Oh I didn't notice! I was to busy count the money from all those ignorent people I scamed!

I find it sad that people have been hoodwinked into plopping down big bucks for something that is trendy when there are plenty of dogs in shelters that need loving homes.

It seems that with these designer mutts, a lot of inbreeding must be going on. This increases the chances for hereditary problems. Whereas a regular mutt is mixed by chance. It's history is unknown and it may have problems as well, but the amount of inbreeding is probably a lot lower.

Edit: Wow, drb, your sarcasm was uncalled for. Nowhere did I say that mixed breeds are perfect. Open your eyes and re-read my sentence where I state that mixed breeds "HAVE PROBLEMS."

For breeders to create a whats-it-poo, they purposely continually breed close relatives over and over and over again. For your average mixed breed dog, it's more likely that two unrelated dogs mated. Therefore, the gene pool is smaller for the inbred dogs than randomly mixed breed dogs.

Aww Cindy you put my worst night mare Doodle in your answer! Gooden Doodle! I seen enough of these mixes to know they are not what they claim to be. They do shed ,they are hyper and they are a groomers nightmare!

I give you credit Howldine for even trying to get a mixed, hybred, designer breeder to really come to this question and give a informed answer. It wont happen because there still either so convinced there right in what their doing they dont need to justify it to anyone or there out looking for their next prospects.

I suspect there will not be many who will bother to answer this question, tho I personally think it very valid. If people are going to be breeding mixes, at least they should be doing something to ensure proper health. A mixed breed can get any of the genetic diseases from either parent breed and these breeding dogs should be tested free of this before ever breeding. Problem is that most aren't doing this, cuz it takes out of the profit of breeding "designer" dogs.

Sure, I'm responsible... those dogs are MONEY IN THE BANK. I have to take care of my stock.

I sell the pups on spay and neuter contracts because I DON"T WANT THE COMPETITION, unless, of course, someone pays me more for breeding stock.

I don't worry about size or any of the other issues, people know they are getting a designer dog.. which is from 2 different breeds.

When I Doodle with my Designer Breeds I get Money- Poo!

Your not going to get a answer from any designer (mutt) breeders. They cannot guarantee size, appearence, and can't even justify the breeding except for the $$$$$ they'll make off of uneducated people.
