A first date is usually a get-to-know you type of experience, so make sure you talk about what the other person is interested in. Sometimes it's best to start off by talking about something you already know about the person, searching for common ground to build off of. Ask questions about his or her family, favorite movies, books, occupation, schooling, etc. Be cautious about mentioning politics, current events, beliefs, and values, but if they come up causually go ahead and allow your date to express his or her point of veiw. Often times you may discover new common interests when you allow your date to talk freely about him or herself. It's a great way to find out whether or not you want to pursue a relationship.

(if serious?) ...What you think is an ideal life (is a topic). What you're working for, and leading to... asking everything there is to know about the Other Person...
(if not) You bash Bush. You talk about TV and Movies, and try to get the person drunk enough to do something quick, then play games about calling them... if they weren't any spectacular.

People generally love to talk about themselves. Try asking questions about them (their hometown, their family, their job, their hobbies, etc.)
Stay away from hot button subjects such as politics or religion unless you want to use these as "weed out" compatibility issues right off the bat.
Also, I would stay away from things that would tend to seem superficial or materialistic--anything that would make me appear to be a "gold-digger".

I don't much care for the "dating rules". No subject is taboo for me, as long as it's approached with care. For example, if discussing religion or politics, you need to make sure you're not attacking your date's views if you disagree. If it's kept a light-hearted discussion, you're fine.

Well the best thing to avoid is religion, sex, politics. Other than that find out about his family, where he went to school, and his likes/dislikes.

It depends. You should really go with the flow. Just avoid abortion, politics, religion, sex (depends on how well the date is going), and other touchy subjects.
