I googled this earlier; most of the Italians came from Southern Italy and were from poor families with little or no education. Most of them planned on returning home after accumulating capitol. (Many of them did.)

you need access to the 1900 census this would give you the data you need, You could subscribe to www.ancestry.com or try a local library.
