I am taking 60 mg of prednisone a day for now to help keep my platelets normal. I was diagnose with ITP. I am swelling everyway my face and my stomach...due to the prednisone. I know this is one of the side of effects. I have gained 15 pounds. Is there anything I can do while taking this for another 5 weeks to loose the swelling and the weight gain? I am really concerned and embarrassed about how I look now?

There's not too much you can do, but one thing that you doctor might agree to is changing the timing of the doses. Side effects are sometimes reduced by taking prednisone every other day, early in the morning, or by lowering the dosage of prednisone and adding a small dosage of Danazol. There is a support/discussion group for ITP that has really good info.

My dog is on prednisone right now also - he was also peeing a LOT and drinking a LOT of water but I never noticed that he was shivering, although he is a large dog with pretty thick fur. I would call another vet and ask their opinion, maybe be even a few other vets. That should get your question answered pretty well. Good luck, hope your dog is feeling better soon!

Unfortunately weight gain is a main side effect of Prednisone.

it does make you gain so much weight. i have been taking those since i was young. Due to having extremely bad asthma. i notice myself get larger n larger every year. thinking it was only my bad eating habits. but no main cause was prednisone and bad eating habits contributed. now that i'm off them i feel the need to take them. i want to take it again for my asthma but the doctors wont let me. I guess all you should do is try to keep in shape and exercise. Hope it all works well for you. i know how u feel

avoiding weight gain is not possible while on prednisone. as soon as you stop the medicine every thing will come to normal... dont worry wait for 5 weeks and consult ur doctor after that for further clarification....
