My 8 (almost 9) year old daughter wants a PSP for her Birthday which is coming up. The wife & I were fine with it until we heard that it can be used to go online thru wireless connections. And not just for gaming, but to basically any website. Is this true? Is there a way to disable that function/feature so that she can play but not go online.

She is too young to be online unsupervised and that is not something we are flexible on right now.

Thanks in advance.

So is there any way to disable the internet capabilities?

Ok, so I can stop it at home, but I take it there is no switch or password or anything that I can do to disable it when she is away?

And I REALLY appreciate the help everyone. Thanks.

If you have wireless internet at home yes the PSP can go online with it.
However its reasonably challenging to setup, especially for a child. You need the passkey for for whatever connection you are trying to connect to and that can be 30 odd digits long.
But even better then that, the PSP has an internet browser which can be locked out.
When you get to the main menu screen, go as far left as you can until you see what looks like a briefcase.
Go down until you get to 'Security Settings'. Press X.
Select 'Change Password'
You will then be asked to enter a 4 digit pin number (just like your bank pin number.
Once you have entered it, in security settings go to the bottom and select 'internet browser start control'.
Enter your PIN and select ON.
Go back to the Internet browser on the main menu and try and open it. It should ask you for your PIN (that your daughter doesnt know) and if you dont enter it then you cant even open the browser and therefore not get online.

Its perfectly safe. I have just tryed it and you cant get round it.
That PIN also restricts the age rating of games so you can make the PSP not play 18, 15, 11 etc rated games unless the PIN is put in.

If you apply the PIN then it works everywhere. Its not possible to access the Internet Browser, and therefore the internet without your daughter knowing the PIN, wherever she is and whatever connection she is connected to (and thats assuming a 9 year old can break standard wireless encryption). She would still need that PIN that you put in to use the feature that allows the connection.
Give her the PSP and put the PIN on it. Everyone is happy then. If you are still not sure, walk into an electronics shop and ask them to demonstrate the password part to you. Any self respecting salesperson can work it out. Its dead easy.

Yes, the PSP can really go online. The PSP has a web browser just like the Playstation 3, and you can surf on webpages. The PSP can also connect to the internet wirelessly through a WiFi connection and so can the Playstation 3, so yes it can be used to surf the web.

It connects online through Wifi, so as long as your connection (if you have one) is encrypted she wouldn't be able to use it (whilst at home at least).

EDIT: (this is on the PSP itself in the security settings section- i hadn't noticed it before);
Yep, there's a parental control level option and an internet browser start control (both password protected)
It may pay to check in store or online (i can't find my manual) just to be positive that these are what i assume they are.

If you have a secured wireless connection, just dont tell her the wep/wpa encryption key. Without that there is no way to access a secured wireless network and therefore no way to get on the internet
