It depends. If you feel the cable guy (or gal, as it may be) has given you good service in a timely fashion, addressing your concerns, and generally leaving you satisfied, by all means, give them a tip.

Cable installers aren't necessarily always well-paid, when I started installing for my local cable company, I was paid $9.00/hr. Pay rates vary from company to company, with higher wages usually only coming after working for the company for several years. And BTW, that $35 service fee mentioned earlier doesn't go to the tech, it goes into the company's coffers.

The short answer is, tip the cable guy like you would any other service employee. If you are happy with the results, slip him a few bucks. If not, don't. You would be suprised at how often subscribers demand that the tech perform extra work (installing extra outlets, hooking up the surround sound and showing the customer how to use it because they don't know how, etc.), which cuts into the tech's timetable, and then just shoo them out the door. For me, it wasn't so much about getting a extra couple bucks as it was knowing that the subscriber appreciated the hard work I was doing, which would end up making my whole day better.

*edit* If those two guys are installing multiple outlets, a good rule of thumb is to give 'em each enough to buy themselves lunch. Or order lunch for them.

Most of the time I do not get tipped. The only people that tip me are people who really appreciate the pride I put in to working at their house. We don't get the money for the service charge. We get paid by the hour. I personally never expect a tip

I generally don't tip the cable guy, their salaries aren't dependent on tips like waiters or similar service staff people. But if they're providing good service, I like to offer a bottled drink, or maybe some cookies. Just a small "thank you".

Yes you tip them. They crawl around in your dirty 140 degree attic and spend a few hours at your house for **** pay. Whoever said they get paid well obviously isn't a true cable guy. I'm a cable guy the tips cover the gas. Most companies give you a truck but you have to pay for your own gas. Depending on how long they are at your home determines the tip amount. I've spent 30 minutes at a house and been tipped $100 and gone to a house for 6 hours and tipped nothing. But the tips are greatly appreciated because the pay truly does suck.

We are not allowed to accept tips where I work. If the customer offers I always refuse and thank them for the offer. But for those that think we make great pay need to go on a ride along with a tech for a week. And the fees you see on your bill is something we never see.

No. You do not tip the cable guy. When you get your first bill you will see an installation fee, thats his tip. And some of those companies have rules against them taking tips.

A cable person should not accept a tip and you should not offer one.

Nothing. The cable guys get paid well and don't need any extra. You'll feel like a total heel if you do, especially after you receive your monthly bill!

Nothing. They're paid to do that service & paid very well. You don't have to tip them anything. If it were something extremely out of the ordinary and a serious problem they were correcting...maybe.
