My aunt's puppy (9 months old) has developed the bad habit of peeing whenever a leash is put on her, even when she's leashed in a crate! How can she be broken of this habit? She's housebroken otherwise.

Why would she be leashed in a crate? That is potentially dangerous as if she snags it on something, she could choke herself.

If it's safe you can wait to leash her outdoors. However, if she isn't being taken directly into a securely fenced area, this is not an option.

An easy solution is to not clip the leash to her collar but to make it into a noose and slip it over her head instead (feed the clip through the handle; the pup's head goes through the "O" made by the leash; pull the leash taut so it's snug around her neck). Once she has gotten outside you can then clip on the leash and remove it from around her neck. Martingale collar/leash combos work on a similar principal.

Make sure noone is getting the dog excited about going out. Either be nonchalant or ignore the dog completely while leashing and taking outdoors.

If she seems to be afraid of being leashed, desensitize her by holding the leash and giving her some good treats, then holding the clip of the leash near her neck and giving treats, then holding the leash with one hand and collar with the other followed by treats, then finally clipping on the leash and giving treats.

She might be peeing because she's afraid of the leash (and what the leash means). Try a harness instead of a collar and try to associate good treats with the leash.

Only leash her when she is outside. She has associated the leash with the fact that she has to pee. Now you need her to understand that when she is outside that is when she pees. Continue to train her with the leash outside. Be consistent and every time she does a good job, give her praise.

Do you atach a leash to his collar or do you employ a choke chain or a harnes. The complex thing about rescue dogs is that you dont know their previous. This knowledge could be invaluable.
