In other words. Is it a sin to celebrate Halloween ?
Back in the mid 80's my mom would buy me masks
and stuff like that. Being from a Pentacostal family,
now they have changed the rules, since 2000.
And have more knowledge about this Pagan holiday.
And the effects it has on society, and the meaning
behind it all. But we still pass out candy to kids, of
course..... But no masks for the church children, or
other members for that matter. Is this right, or just a
big misunderstanding ? Is Halloween a sin ? Best
asnwer wins.

Unless youy are an idiot, you know
that many have misrepresented,
Christianity, and other religions.
But Pagans are who they are.
And they have the right to celebrate
their own ideas, and beliefs.....

Halloween derives from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was their New Year. Samhain was supposed to be a time when the separation between the worlds of the living and the dead became fragile, and spirits could pass through and harrass the living. People wore masks to disguise themselves from spirits seeking vengeance. Socially, Halloween functions like Mardi Gras, allowing the people to disguise themselves and act in ways not normally allowed to their stations in life.

The Catholic Church subsumed Samhain with All Saints Day, moving that feast from May 13 to November 1, possibly to allow people to continue to celebrate their traditional holiday, with a Chrisitan gloss.

If Halloween is a sin, so are Christmas and Easter, originally "pagan" holidays. The Puritans in England and later North America did not celebrate any of those holidays due to their pagan origins.

Halloween is not a sin. It started a long time ago in Ireland where everybody was Catholic. Neways the reason why they dressed up was to scare away the demons and they asked for a treat in exchange for praying for your loved one to go to heaven. See everyone gets confused about this, but I wrote a speech about the orgins of Halloween a few years ago, so I had to do LOADS of research! and the reason Halloween is on an OLD pagan holiday is because the Pope decided he wanted to take all the pagan holidays and turn them into christian holidays, so easter and christmas are also on old pagan holidays...... now if you are a jahovas witness you might say all these things are a sin...but as far as I know pentecostle people still celebrate christmas.... So I think they are just confused.

Whether or not it is a sin is between the individual and God. However, from a christian perspective, the Bible says to "have no fellowship with the works of darkness but rather reprove them" Ephesians 5:11. There are numerous verses in the bible, 1 Thees. 5:21-22, Deut. 18:10-14, Rom 12:2, just to name a few more that lend them self to this thought. The book of Deut. says that while man looks at outward appearances, God looks on the heart of a man. While there is nothing wrong with putting on a mask and dressing up as your favourite character you have to ask what is the motive of your heart. If I love God and want to abstain from evil, why would I want to portray evil, as in dressing like the devil or a demon or a witch? While you can not judge the heart of a man a lot of times his outward actions and words lay it bare.

Ultimately God is not up in Heaven ready to send everyone to hell who wears a mask this Halloween or who goes trick or treating. God is a God of love, He is on the contrary waiting on any one who would turn from evil to come to Him. While we argue over history and opinions God is looking on the heart of man and he loves all. His word says that Love covers a multitude of sin whatever it may be.

Also sin is not exclusive to christianity, which is not mythology. Christainity is very historically documented as are Hinduism or Islam. Sin by definition is the breaking of a law which is there for your protection and the protection of others. Sin can be towards God and your fellow man. Sin is also inherant in prettty much all religions which hold to the belief of God or a Diety. However it may be defined it is there.

Halloween or Samhain (sow-en) is the Wiccan New Year. It's the day when we honor our loved ones that have passed away because on this day the veil between the worlds is the thinnest. Basically putting to rest the old and welcoming the new. This was one Holiday that the church couldn't get rid of when they outlawed Paganism so they now have all saints day or All Hallows Day Nov. 1 to appease the masses. Halloween means Hallows Eve.

It depends on how it is celebrated. I just look at Halloween as a fun holiday and nothing more than that. I eat candy, go to haunted houses, and go to parties. I don't think that is a sin. But others like to go out and start a whole lot of mischief and chaos. That right there may be considered a sin.

Not looking for best answer, just for people to understand that Halloween is not a sin, not associated with Satan (a Christian invention of the EARLY church) nor does it have any roots in evil! On this day I honor my family who have passed away those I knew and those I never knew. I dress in costume because I enjoy it (I am 48) and pass out candy to kids because it is fun. No evil here!

Hallowe'en is NOT a sin. It also is not a holiday...it's a festival. It is the celtic new year and encompasses remembering the ancestors amounst other things. It is not for any chrisian to say that hallowe'en is a sin. As sin only exists in christian mythology where as hallowe'en or Samhain is much older than christianity by a few thousand years.

It's a silly overreaction to not let kids play dress up and have fun getting candy. I have to admit I probably would not like my kids dressing up as something truly evil like a devil or demon, but they usually, on their own, pick some innocuous character that they want to pretend to be. It's actually the only time we intentionally rub shoulders with our neighbors, and I think it's a great neighborhood activity.

Care must be taken over this celebration to make sure that it is fun and only fun. Both the Church of England and The Church of Rome dislike this Satanist celebration ceremony of evil. It is not without significance that the following day is ALL SAINT'S DAY
