You can charge the PS3's wireless controllers by plugging it into the PS3 system while it's on, plugging it into a computer/laptop with a USB slot, or buy a wall charger for the PS3 controllers and charge them by plugging them into a wall. Also, you can charge the controllers while you are playing a game.
Most of the time, I charge my PS3 wireless controllers with my laptop while I'm on Yahoo Answers or when I'm on the internet.
The HD is used for saving anything that is saved onto the PS3 console, such as music, game saves, videos, demos, and pictures.

the controller is recharged by connecting to the usb lead that came with it, only recharges when the ps3 is turned on. the hd holds your game saves, music pics etc, and downloaded games.
