My question is "do you agree w/ this movie or not"......I disagree and find it appalling that Nicole Kidman would act in such a movie.....

It has nothing to do w/ fear of losing my faith, rather I will not support this atheist by giving my money to his film...also why target Children, is it b/c he knows he has no basis for adults?

Thanks, there are many movies that promote agendas that do not agree with the bible. Children are an easy target.

Well you are certainly right in that Philip Pullman was interviewed as saying that he wrote this series because he found CS Lewis's Narnia series disgusting and wanted to have an atheist alternative.

As far as the movie goes, I don't think I'd get too worried about it. I've read Pullman's work and the truth is--it will have no great impact on anyone because he did a horrible job on the conclusion. The Golden Compass was good. The Subtle Knife was excellent. However, The Amber Spyglass was awful. It was just bad writing. He made established characters act unrealistically--frankly he ran out of gas.

Movies aren't that persuasive. I wouldn't get worried about it. I'm just sad that it isn't worth being made into a movie trilogy. Harry Potter by contrast who was referenced by some answerers here--that has been a good series of movies (especially the last one which ironically was better than book 5).

Well, I don't expect agreement by most anyone here.

Best,

Todd

Do the big bad fantasies scare someone who is SUPPOSE to be strong in faith? Are you so afraid the people will take a work of fiction so serious that they will follow it as truth? It's fiction for crying out loud! This is why Christians burned people at the stake! They were ignorant and listened to/believed others who were ignorant!

I neither agree or disagree. I just think it is a fun piece of fiction!

So I read about the controversy:

"Several key themes of the novels, the rejection of organised religion and the abuse of power in the Catholic Church, are to be diluted in the adaptation."

Is it not true? The Catholic church in it's past DID abuse her power.

Also, organized religion has become the anathema to Christ's work on earth.

Looks like a good movie to me, so what's the problem?

Also:

"Director Weitz says that he believes His Dark Materials is "not an atheistic work, but a highly spiritual and reverent piece of writing", and Nicole Kidman, a Catholic, has defended her decision to star in the film, saying that "the Catholic Church is part of my essence. I wouldn't be able to do this film if I thought it were at all anti-Catholic".

The author of the books apparently has stated that his goal is to turn children against Christianity, that his trilogy is the anti-Narnia. Another article I read says that he actually uses the name YHWH (with the vowels) in the movie as the character that the "hero" will overthrow.

If true, I think a good heads up for parents is in order because it is aimed at children, not adults. Adults can sort it out for themselves.

Well why not, Narnia has a Christian agenda and as an atheist, I really enjoyed it. Don't be threatened by an opposing viewpoint. It is just a chance to learn more about the world you live in, unless you just want to live in a little bubble of denial.

Oh, Heaven forbid that I defile myself by watching a film written by an atheist. Whatever shall I do? Quick, get the Holy Water so I may bathe, posthaste.

Any Christian who cannot watch a film, silently disregarding plot lines that violate his/her beliefs, needs to go back to Sunday School. If the film is blatently against our beliefs, we have another option: DON'T WATCH IT.

Why are you shocked that Nicole Kidman would appear in a film written by an atheist?! For God's sake, did you see 'Eyes Wide Shut'? It was one step from pornography! Isn't that worse?! I don't think she uses the Bible as her compass when picking films in which she'll appear (although I wish she did).

So what. I love the fact that he can promote his atheism, just like I can promote and live out my Christianity without being killed, prisoned, or persecuted. Get used to it . . they call it freedom of religion.

I can't comment. It all depends upon the ethics of the characters. I will definately see it now, though.
