Teeth are alive and previous answers are partly correct. They have a nerve and blood supply the same as fingers, toes and other parts of the body. They need to have some feeling in them so you can feel when you are biting something. So long as there is no infection or problem with the tooth, the nerve behaves itself.
If a tooth dies (sometimes after a knock or deep filling) it can become infected due to necrotic tissue. Unlike areas on the surface of the body, infection in a root has nowhere to go and the pressure can cause immense pain. A dead or dying tooth can also darken considerably which can look unpleasant, especially in the front of the mouth.
If there is infection (abcess) and the tooth is badly decayed or has very large fillings, it is usually extracted. Otherwise the root is removed, the space filled with an inert filling material then the tooth is either restored with a filling or crowned (teeth which are dead tend to be more brittle which is why crowns are often fitted to make them stronger.)

Go to the drugstore (or if you are lucky, send someone for you!) and get some of the products used to help babies as they are teething. I know it sounds weird, but there are gels that you can put right on the gums or on the tooth, and they do help. Also, pick up a tube of Sensodyne toothpaste - it'll help as well. And an old wives tale, that seems to work, is to prepare a small glass of warm salted water with a litttle white vinegar in it, and rinse your mouth. Rinse all around the area. There is a product called aspergum, but I don't think it will help you. You know, one other thing might help, and it has to do with your sinus cavities -- mine rest too low and sometimes make my teeth hurt. If you are congested, it can cause a problem with pain too. Then if the pain cannot be controlled, be prepared for a root canal. It's expensive, time consuming, but sometimes it is the only answer. If the pain gets too bad, call the dentist right away and have him look at it. I had a root canal that bothered me for years -- and when it was redone, they discovered a small stick had been left in the canal. Dentists can do root canals, but I would never have one done there. Go to specialists -- a dentist may do 10 root canals in a year, but a specialist will do that many in a few days. The skills really show when your teeth no longer hurt.

The nerves are there to let you know that something is wrong in your mouth. A toot ache could lead to infection, and an infection could lead eventually to death. So... the nerves are there to let you know that you've not cleaned your mouth properly, and unless you go to the dentist your face is going to rot off. [With thick sarcasm] Wow that was a really hard question, actually had to use my brain for that one... whew... [End sarcasm]

If nerves did not supply teeth we would be unaware of the force of our chewing, nor of what we were chewing. We would continue to bite down for example on a stone in the food, and just shatter the teeth!

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

Pain exists to inform us of a problem, something we need to react to and sort out.
